Hi Ceep,

I'm one of those people that never respond anymore. I read this list everyday

though and when you wrote this last message, it was like you reached out and

grabbed me. I've been struggling for the last year with a slow weight gain.

Not a lot, but still a gain.

I had lap RNY on 3/16/00 and it was very successful.............at first. I

went from a size 28 to a 12. Then it started to creep up on me. Just a little

bit, but now I'm in a size 16. I still feel much better than before my WLS

and I know I'm healthier, but I keep gaining a pound here and a pound there.

I'm now 19 pounds heavier than my lowest recorded weight. I want it to stop

now, but I've tried everything. I'm even thinking about that stupid Hollywood

Juice diet. Yuck. I hate dieting!

My weight loss surgeon had me come back for the first year and then nothing

since then. I haven't had anything checked in 20 months. Stupid I know, but

my family doctor retired this year and I just got a new one. I think I'll

make an appt. with him to get blood tests. Any suggestions as to what I'll

need? As you can tell, I could use all the advice you have.

Thank you,

Gaylene

Hi ,

I've had no tests at all. I know what a stretched stoma is and that's a

possibility. How is that tested? My stomach was transected so if I had a SLD

I'd probably be dead or very seriously ill. Or at least that's what I was

told.

A fistula? You mean the two parts can find each other? Holy cow, that would

be my luck!!!

Dear Gaylene,

It upsets me to no end when the self-blame, shame and feelings of

failure rear their nasty heads as the weight creeps up. So often, it

really is a mechanical problem, whether a staple line disruption, a

stretched stoma or even (per our recent thread) hypertrophy. So, my

first question is, because the easiest to check is the SLD and

stretched stoma, have you completely ruled those that out?

, that is very wise. gaylene, read this and weigh it with your urgeon

before you do anything. I was thinking that if people have a large

stoma and an enlarged intestine that this would give a flse reading even

under the best and safest circumstances.

thanks for writing about this right away.

Dear Gaylene: We are SO glad you posted. We want you here with us. I

agree

the first thing is to rule out mechanics. You go to your surgeon and

say I

want a scope. There is a kind of primitive test you can do at home.

Anyone?

What is the cottage cheese test? Can you tell Gaylene how to do it?

again gaylene, stay her with us. Glad you are back. Thank you for being

so

honest. You can't mend what you won't admit.

Yes, I think we can rule out a SLD. The stoma is tested with a scope, but I

don't know if a doctor will do that just to see if the stoma is stretched.

After all, you're not considered " sick. " A fistula is another possibility.

I really believe, although there probably is some normal bounceback longterm

and, unless you know you're eating all the wrong things, snacking, junk food,

etc., the larger gains are probably mechanical problems and NOT our faults!

Actually, the way to really find out is to have a consultation with a

different doc, someone who's been doing WLS for at least 5-10 years, has an

impeccable reputation, someone who does all types of WLS, and tell them about

the gain and that you don't know why it's happening, and you're considering a

revision (Dr. Gagner & the Mt. Sinai group come to mind). Even if you don't

really want another surgery, this is a way to possibly find out what's going

on with your body, and IMHO, knowlegde is power!

Good luck honey, we're with you!

I totally agree that a second surgeon may be more willing to find the

truth. Also Mt. Sinai has a complete program so there would be many various

professionals to get to the route of the problem. Fay Bayuk

Yes, and to add to this, I had my stomach transection with Dr. Gagner. He is

totally NON-judgemental, and they do every different type of WLS there.

Gaylene, you only get to tell the truth. You don't get to feel like a

failure. NOT ALLOWED. It isn't the truth. You are, let's say, wobbling

around. Let's say you are being challenged. Failure, no. Challenge, yes.
