Guest guest
Hi Beth, you'll get lots of great info here I'm sure! There also two other groups that may help you also. OSSG-plasticsurgery and OSSG-protein. From those groups I heard about doubling my protein, from 60 g to 120 g per day 8 weeks prior to and 8 weeks after any additional surgeries after WLS. It helped me tremendously to heal faster. Plus it helped take off a couple extra pounds I didn't think I would lose. My goal weight was always 140, just because I didn't think I could ever go any lower. I'm now at 137 lbs. (5 ' tall, size 8) and hope to lose a couple more for bounce back. For most of us proximal RNY's we need at least 60 g of protein a day, more is better of course. I drink at least 3 - 30 g shakes per day and still try to get in a fourth once in a while. Good luck to you, Donna M. Guest guest
Yes..... this month's " Shape " magazine has a mathematical configuration..... Here it is from October 2002 issue p176, 177: " ...(you exercise three times a week for 30-60 minutes), you probably don't need more than the RDA - 0.4 grams per pound of ideal body weight, says Melinda Manore, Ph.D. To calculate your daily protein needs in grams, multiply your weight by 0.4, (For a 145 pound woman, that's 58 grams, or 12-15 percent of total daily calories.) If you're moderately active (you exercise four to six days a week for 30-60 minutes), you may need slightly more from 0.6-0.7 grams. (That's 76-101.5 grams, or about 20 percent of total daily calories, for a 145-pound woman.) If you're highly active (you exercise daily for an hour or more) you may need even more protein than that - from 0.9-1 gram. (For a 145-pound woman , that's 130.5-145 grams, or about 30 percent of total daily calories.) You also may need this amount if you are recovering from a serious illness or exercising at higher altitudes than usual - for example, you're backpacking at 7,000 feet but live at sea level, At higher altitudes, your body is deprived of oxygen until you adapt, placing a stress on all systems and increasing cellular damage. Protein helps protect and repair cells while your body acclimates, which can take several weeks. " The next question in the magazine is interesting as well.... p177 " Is it a problem if my protein intake is higher than the RDA? " " If you consume more protein than you really need, you risk several negative consequences. First, you could gain weight. Consuming more calories than you need in a day, even if they're protein calories, will cause your body to store the extra calories as fat. ... it can cause dehydration because it takes a lot of water to eliminate extra protein... Excess protein also has been linked to bone loss because the more protein you eat, the more calcium you excrete, for reasons scientists don't fully understand. " Hope this helps..... I'm still trying to figure out mine... *sigh*.... Definitely a good issue to pick up... Betty Protein Needs and TT insurance coverage Hello to all from a lurker for the past couple of months. I'm just wondering if there is a place that I can find out how much protein I need per day. I know if anybody has surgery, that the protein needs can double, but I'm just not too sure how much I need on a regular basis. As soon as I hear from one of the local plastic surgeons, I will know if my insurance has accepted the TT that I'm hoping that they will cover. ALSO, has anybody gotten insurance coverage for a TT without having a hernia? I don't have any hernia's, but I'm hoping that they will cover it. Whatever information you have would be valuable to me....thanks! ===== Beth Watts RNY Procedure November 1992 West Palm Beach, FL __________________________________________________
Guest guest
<> This may sound like a cop-out, but only you know how much protein you need per day. My surgeon's guideline is 60 grams per day. My protein levels are dropping with an intake of 100+ per day. So, I am left experimenting my way up the ladder until I find the right number for my absorption rate. Let your labs be your guide! Guest guest
Thanks to all that responded and particularly to Vitalady for your letter used for insurance approval. The plastic surgeon has already sent a letter to the insurance for approval, BUT in case it isn't covered the first time, I will keep this letter and forward it to my surgeon to help cover it when they submit a second time. I have Blue Cross/Blue Shield PPO for state employees of Florida and it's quite a good insurance, and I'm hoping/praying that it works so i don't have to live with this " limp tummy " for the rest of my life. ===== Beth Watts RNY Procedure November 1992 West Palm Beach, FL __________________________________________________ Yahoo! - We Remember 9-11: A tribute to the more than 3,000 lives lost http://dir.remember.yahoo.com/tribute
