Canadian Brain Tissue Bank

History

Founded in 1981 under the sponsorship of the Canadian Neurological Disease

Coalition and the Huntington Society of Canada with support from the Ewart

Angus Foundation

Established to meet the needs of researchers in psychiatric and neurologic

diseases

Continued funding from MRC/CIHR and other government and voluntary agencies

Mission

To retrieve scientifically valuable tissue through a formal donor program

To provide optimally preserved and characterized tissue to researchers for

peer reviewed projects

Standardized retrieval, storage and distribution of tissue

Expert neuropathological diagnosis

Well documented clinical information

Provision of diagnostic verification to families

A meaningful way for donors and families to contribute to research

Ensures optimal utilization of tissue for research

Use of Tissue

Over 72 researchers have received tissue for morphological, biochemical and

molecular studies of diseases including schizophrenia, affective disorders,

suicide, multiple sclerosis and neurodegenerative diseases such as

Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, dementia with Lewy bodies, progressive

supranuclear palsy, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis and others

Tissues have been used in projects leading to

Identification of mutations in Huntington's, Alzheimer's and Machado-ph

diseases

Characterization and cloning of dopamine receptors

Characterization of dementia with Lewy bodies

Characterization of myelin proteins
