Guest guest
WHAT IF you ate your vegetables and fruit, like a vegetarian, and got ALL your protein from protein shakes? Everyone is saying that you can only absorb protein from the protein shakes because they are predigested and if that is the case, meat is a waste of time. So, WHY NOT drink 120 grams or so of protein shakes a day PLUS eat your vegetables and fruit and forget about meat and eggs?
Guest guest
I think if you enjoyed protein shakes, fruit and vegetables, the diet you described would be healthy, as long as you made sure you got plenty of B vitamins, either in the shakes or with supplements. By the way, I don't believe that it's necessary for most weight loss surgery patients to supplement protein. Let's say you could only get protein from shakes. Then people like me, and about 98% of my doctor's patients, would have severe protein defeciencies. We would have suppressed immune systems and very bad wound healing, for starters. My immune system is great. After my wound complication they (my non-wls surgeon and wound care nurse) were amazed at how quickly I healed. I replaced the blood lost more quickly than they anticipated. They think part of the reason I didn't get toxic shock syndrome from the lost wound packing was that I just be one of those people " born with a great immune system. " Certainly, some people have problems absorbing protein. I'm proof that not everyone who has had a proximal/medial roux-en-y gastric bypass needs to supplement protein. BTW, some vegetarians appear to be pretty healthy and don't get what many nutritionists think of as " enough " protein. Other vegetarians have problems with poor immune health and anemia. Our bodies are different, even when we don't have weight loss surgery. Some physicians are using the term " cheese pizza vegetarians " to refer to people who become vegetarians casually, without reading about non-meat sources of protein. Those people tend to have problems, but I know some very healthy vegetarians who eat don't supplement their protein at all. They just choose protein rich foods at meals.
