Boy, everyone does it differently. I had a hernia repair, abdominoplasty

w/upper muscle repair, and a breast lift. Surgery was at 2:00, lasted 4

hours, and I went home the next morning. By the time I woke up from surgery,

catheter was gone, and no pain pump. Did not ever wear a binder, but did

have two drains for 10 days.

I had a hernia repair, abdominoplasty (panni plus abs tightening) and

outer thigh + butt lift on August 9th. I had four drains, three of

which came out in five days, the fourth in seven or ten days (I

forget). I wore a binder for a month. My surgery took 7.5 hours.

The catheter was removed as soon as I got up to walk on the day

following surgery. No biggie at all.

The only really painful thing was the abdominal muscles. Stiff and

hurtful when I arose. Hurt like Hell when I coughed or sneezed (had

to hold my belly when I felt something coming on). A surprise sneeze

just about did me in for a full 4-5 minutes. BUT . . . compared to

my WLS, it was a breeze! One of the reasons was probably that I was

in such fine shape for this one, and in such poor shape for my WLS (a

lap duodenal switch). I healed fast and well, probably because I had

loaded up on protein drinks for the two weeks preceding the plastics;

also some vitamin K to aid in clotting.

Bottom line: it should be much, much easier on you than your bypass.

Good luck,

Steve

Vicki, all I had was the panni and it really wasn't all of that bad.

I had two drain tubes that stayed about 3 weeks (kind of long but not

bad.) I had a catheter until the morning after surgery. It did not

hurt as bad. I was kind of out of it the day after surgery but I

suspect that was because of the meds. Since I have never had a

hernia repaired or tubal ligation, I have no idea what to expect

there. Good luck on the surgery.

One of the things that helped tremendously for me was the fact

that I had a hospital bed at home and could keep my legs elevated.

It seemed to hurt less then laying flat. Laying on my side was out

of the question. Might want to use a recliner for a while after the

surgery to sleep in or use pillows under the Knees. That really was

about the only adjustment I had to make. Lori O.

Make sure you've got pillows. All my TT who've stayed here tend to make a

nest of pillows part of the time and use the recliner part of the time.

I wasn't smart enough to use pillows (mine was 7 yrs ago yesterday!), so I

stayed in the recliner. A LOT.

Vicki,

It won't necessarily be " worse " than your bypass.... it could be much

EASIER! I had an abdominoplasty two weeks ago. The surgery was about 4 1/2

hours long and I did have a foley until 10:00 pm that night, when it was

removed. I didn't have a PCA, just got shots when needed. I had very little

pain actually. I only took a few of the pain shots and was released and came

home the morning after the surgery (a 23 hour stay). I was pretty

uncomfortable for a day or two, but after week one, am doing just great with

moving around. I had two drains that were removed about 10 days post op. I

have to wear a binder or compression garment for six weeks. This seems so

much easier than my original weight loss surgery was.

Don't worry too much; I worried that it would be awful! You may be

pleasantly surprised, and you may be wanting to get the heck out of that

hospital way before the 3-5 days that they are predicting. Good luck!

Hi,

My panni, ovary removal & liver biopsies, were this past April.

Oh--and a huge lipoma on my inside thigh, while I was under anesth.

* I was scared, too!

My Bariatric surgeon did my panni (instead of a plastic surgeon), and it was

NOTHING compared to my open prox. RNY recovery.

They did not do " muscle work " like the plastic surgeon does. I'm still

pleased with the results.

I requested the SAME Anesthesiologist as my first surgery.

They were really good & I " normally' have weird allergic reactions &

sometimes vomiting from anesth. It was a cinch, comparatively, for ME!

The recovery discomfort was NOTHING compared to my RNY. I had a difficult

time with that one...for five weeks.

Anyway.

All the best. My usual suggestions while I can remember them are: 1) get a

cane...it's good for walking, reaching and hitting people to get their

attention 2) put all of the food and dishes from the upper cupboards down on

the counter because you can't reach up there for awhile 3) get some of those

personal wipes with aloe since you can't bathe for awhile and they're a

great way to feel fresher. You'll feel great when it's all over and you

have a nice wasit with supportive muscles.

Sneezing was horrible, but laughing wasn't much better. I was watching a

comedian on tv about 3 weeks after my abdominoplasty and had to leave the

Well, it looks pretty good so far, at least parts of it. I'm really happy

with how it looks from the belly button down. I'm still swollen, but I can

tell it's going to look really great based on how good it already looks.

What I'm not happy with is the upper abdominal section. I had a full

abdominoplasty with an anchor incision. So, I've got an incision that runs

hip to hip, and another that goes breast bone to pubic bone. I had discussed

over and over with the doc about my concerns about the skin above the waist -

my minimum standard for " success " was that NOTHING hang over the waistband of

my pants when I sit down with jeans on (LOL...Okay, not like I want it all,

or anything, huh?). I wasn't concerned about scars - that's why I went for

the incision on the upper part - to remove the midriff skin. Well, she (the

surgeon) wasn't nearly aggressive enough. I still have loose, wobbly skin up

there. When I bend forward you can still see a " turkey gobbler " effect above

the waist - skin hanging down and dangling. The surgeon has already said,

" Oh, we can fix that, " but the problem is, even though she will do it at NO

COST, the anesthesiologist and OR will still expect to get paid. An hour of

those two things is not cheap. My insurance paid for the panniculectomy

portion of my surgery, but I don't think they'll pick up any of the tab for

these corrections.

Anyway, right now, I'm obsessing over this. It makes me sick. I

actually think I looked sort of deformed - I have this majorily tight, flat

lower belly and tight waist, and then this dangling poochy thing right above

the waist that goes all the way up to my breasts. I know that time and money

will fix it, but I wanted it to be right the first time.

I don't have the hernia, but I'm going to need, at most, the

adominoplasty (TT) butt and thighs, breast lift and maybe arms.

Steve, I didn't know you could have as much done at one time as you

did. I assume the hernia was covered by insurance, but was anything

else? How much did you have to cough up out of pocket.

I need to start looking for surgeons and saving my pennies.

I hope my husband keeps his job and insurance. People are dropping

like flies at work here in Silicon Village (just next to Silicon

Valley). I estimate it will take me 6 mos. more to lose the 40

pounds I need to lose before surgery.

Thanks for your input.

I am very interested in hearing people's experiences with the surgery

and also about how it changed the way you look, your perception of

yourself, how it changed your movement, etc.. Did it make as big a

difference as WLS?

Thanks again,

Vicki A.

So Beth,

How does it look now? Can you feel a big difference already?
