Guest guest
I joined the SCA (Society for Creative Anachronism), where we re-create medieval times in modern ways, and have great fun at it (I'm taking up archery, and I'm passably good at it!) We research a particular time and place in the middle ages (900 a.d. to 1650 a.d.), and build personas around our chosen time, then attempt to make period clothing that our personas would wear, learn about who was king, who was influential (popes for example), what wars/plagues/calamities were taking place, what we might eat, and so on. We do crafts from our times as well. I have learned a little bobbin lace, and moved from cross stitching (non-period for my persona) to blackwork stitching. In the SCA I am Lorète, in servince to Her Majesty Eleanor of Aquitaine. This very together lady was queen of both England AND France, and even went on Crusade to the Middle East with her French king husband. One of the rare women to choose her divorce and then remarry a man of her choosing, a woman who was as in charge of herself as any woman could be in the 12th century. While I'm learning about her, I'm learning about her world and her culture, and it's great fun. I spend a lot of time dressed in medieval clothes that I would not have worn pre-op (because you just don't find a lot of chemises and surcotes in sizes to fit 400 pound women), and when I'm at events I'm on my feet all day, working in the kitchen, wandering among the merchants, shooting arrows into bales of straw, tending fires, cheering my favorite combat knights and rapiers, all things I could not do when I was debilitated by my size. I LOVE being half the woman I once was. I'm not at goal, and struggling to get there, but I am having FUN in ways I never would have imagined. I've also started going to the gym, where I get on the treadmill or the stationary bike, and ENJOY the exercise! Does that answer your question? ~~Lyn G

Guest guest
I volunteer my time .... otherwise I read and work crossword puzzles (which reading I've only read text books lately and the later is out of the questions now... with homework... *GRIN*). Before I never thought about volunteering as I never felt good and couldn't commit to anything. I volunteer for my school (Student Government - working on committees and the such), Lion's Club (working card parties and baking pies for events), Mediacs (Communication and Theater club working as a stage hand or running equipment), Humane Society (with my allergies, it is pretty much isolated to trying to work up funds from donations ). This is what I do for fun.... This is my NEW life... and I love it.... *GRIN*.... Betty what do you do for fun? Hi everybody, I am thinking of trying some new stuff. I am thinking of taking up bow archery for instance. (target type). i wondered what other people are doing for fun now that they are less in one way and more in aother after GB. I am thinking especially of stuff you do to be active with others that is really a fun time and good companionship. FUN is the keyword. I remember one lady who used to post here alot who played tournament scrablle, I bet that was fun too. een though I can't spell so I think it is probably out for me as per scrabble (grin) what do you think? also if anyone out there does transcription for a living, let me knw by private email? thanks ceep sagitarius maybe person Homepage: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Graduate-OSSG Unsubscribe: mailto:Graduate-OSSG-unsubscribe
Guest guest
This is going to sound corny, but I spend most of my extra time with my family. I especially look forward to the one day a week that my husband has off because it's date day for us. We go out to lunch somewhere new and then we usually walk one of the local malls. Or we will go to antique shops or those warehouse places. The other day he is off we spend doing something as a family, which usually involves some sort of walking. On good days, we play miniature golf or walk in the woods and on bad days, we spend them at the malls. I wasn't able to do any of these things prior to wls, so it's very special to both myself and my family that I can now do them. Infact, sometimes my 7 year old daughter can hardly keep up with her old mom! I also volunteer a couple days a week in my daughter's classroom and both my husband and I are room parents for her class. For quiet days at home, I usually read or do word puzzles. I am also into fabric painting, but don't find much time anymore to do this. Next summer, my goal is to get back on a bike so that I can join my family when they go biking. My daughter would love to have me go skating with her, but I am a little nervous about that - haven't done it in many, many years! One of the biggest things that happened to me this past summer was being able to join my family and my husband's co-workers at their annual amusement park jaunt. I rode as many rides as everyone else and was able to walk all over the park without getting tired. It was wonderful!
