Guest guest
In one of your posts regarding zinc which I printed out to keep as reference, you made the comment that zinc toxicity occurs after prolonged daily intake at levels of 150mg daily or higher. But that oysters have 148mg. And i read at www.merck.com that 1g of zinc is fatal. I know there is a difference between fatal and toxic however am I to understand that if I eat oysters and say lima beans every day I will be putting myself in the toxic range for zinc? And the recommended is 50mg. Now this confuses me. Was that a typo that oysters have 148 mg of zinc (is it maybe 48) or what? Sue could you please clarify this for me? Rasley mailto:drasley@... I only know what I read in the book, but it is 148 mg. for oysters but that is in a 3.5oz. serving. the book describes toxicity - if you took more than 150mg. daily - as copper deficiency anemia, reduced HDL, depressed immune function. then it goes on to say that acute toxicity is quite rare because ingestion of amounts large enough [2gm per kilogram of body wt.] usually provokes vomiting. does that help any? i take 50mg. a day. i know others take 100mg. a few people have said that 100 cause stomach upset and the book even says that it could if you are taking zinc sulfate on an empty stomach. the RDA is actually 19mg. but you won't find that amt. in a zinc supplement in the store - maybe thats the amt. in a multi vit. sue [encyclopedia of nutritional supplements]
