Started this journey 17 months ago o 4/9/01 at 5'4 " , 278 lbs. I

fluctuate between 170 and 174 and am convinced this is what I will

stabilize at. I'm a large frame, size 10/12, I can feel my hip

bones, there's hardly any fat left in that area. The rest of me is

quite bony, my chest is just that, a chest, hardly any boobs left --

went from a 42DD to a 34/36 B.

I have exercised religiously since June 2001. My exercise of choice

is one hour of advanced high impact step aerobics and one hour of

weight machines for toning my body. I am quite happy with what the

exercise has done for me and I firmly believe in exercising along

with the rapid weight loss. I know I wouldn't be as small as I am if

I had lost the weight alone without exercise.

Anyway, my concern is this. Lately I have been extremely

exhausted/worn out after my 4X weekly gym visits. My whole upper

body feels like it has been run over by a Mac truck! My son says

maybe I need to change my routine, that maybe I'm overworked at work

and it's showing in the gym. He says I may even lose those last

elusive 20 lbs I've been after if I do different exercises. I don't

want to change, I love the high I get from the step class, I

especially love the " club " music the 20 y.o. instructor uses, keeps

me young :-)

I try to keep up with my vitamins, although I will admit to

forgetting my calcium, but I'm working VERY hard to not forget.

Does anyone have any opinion on this? Do I just need a break from

the gym? I love it and truly look forward to it. Walking in circles

or on a treadmill is not for me, too boring.

Thanks!

Hi Estela,

The one thing I've learned on my journey to becoming a personal trainer is

that you will suffer burnout at some point if you keep doing the same thing

over and over. Not only that, but no matter what you do, your body will

become accustomed to a certain routine, and eventually the exercise you are

doing becomes less effective. The best way to work your bod is to switch it

up every few weeks before it has a chance to get into that mode. If you are

doing aerobics, consider taking a break from it and doing something else you

can tolerate, like rollerblading maybe? Keep up the weight training, but

change your exercises.. dumbell presses instead of barbell, even little

changes like that make all the difference.

I recently took 3 weeks off (I still did recreational exercise, but no gym

time) and it made all the difference in the world in my attitude and how my

bod is responding...

Also, I've found that " interval " cardio works out much better than a

straight hour of whatever. 2 minutes regular intensity, 2 minutes high

intensity.. for 30 minutes ends up being more effective than that hour...

There are a ton of different opinions, I'm just giving you mine from

personal experience :)

Good luck, and congratulations on everything you've accomplished so far!

Dear Estela,

You are not going to want to hear this but if you want to lose more weight,

tone up further, you are going to have to change your exercise routine. The

body adapts very quickly to cardio and after awhile that 1 hour 4x a week is,

for you, like a walk through a mall while shopping. You don't have to give

up what you do; just add something else -- perhaps a fifth day of stretching,

or running, or dancing, or inline skating, or biking. Just something

different -- you might even rotate that fifth day through a long list of

things you want to just try.

I am not sure this has anything to do with being tired so I would go see a dr

about that part -- perhaps you are anemic or something like that.

Best of luck & awesome job!!! You are doing great!!

Estela,

I found that when I was exercising like a mad woman (like you are now!) I

really needed to increase how much food I was eating, otherwise, my nose was

on the ground half the time. Consider adding another protein supplement and

another snack to your day - increased food can actually cause you to drop a

few pounds, as crazy as it sounds. Your son is right also, you may need to

change your routine around a bit. If you love your step class, by all means

continue doing it, but perhaps change your lifting routine?
