Thanks, Ceep, you helped put this into perspective. I had another experience

that turned out to be my wake up call...

On vacation I noticed a mole on my breast was shedding and bleeding and

became angry and ugly looking. I was sure I had melanoma as I had seen it

before on my friend that died and it looked very similar. I told no one as I

did not want to spoil their vacations. I waited two days before coming home

and hitting the doctor's office. Two of the worse days in my life. I was

sure I was dying. In my anguish I questioned why God would give me my new

body only to take it away from me before I could live again. I remembered

the time I found a lump in my breast but somehow that wasn't as bad, after

all, a woman could beat breast cancer, but who beats melanoma?? It was a

death sentence, I was sure.

I thought about all the money my husband and I worked for and invested

without enjoying. All the times I said " no " to myself thinking how much I

want to stash away for retirement years. Always the future...have to think

about the future...now I was sure there was no future.

As I sat before the doctor he realized I was weak with worry and he held my

hand after the examination. He smiled and told me it was _______oma (can't

remember the actual name, but it ended with " oma " which scared the begeebers

out of me) and then proceeded to tell me it was benign and he could remove

it with no problem!

Upon returning home I fell to my knees and thanked God for sparing my life

and beat myself up a bit for thinking I should be spared anything, after all

who am I in the big scheme of things and why shouldn't bad things come into

my life, too? Chit happens to all of us.

The second thing I did was call the chief of Plastics at a big hospital here

in Chicago and made the appointment I had put off for insurance reasons. In

the bible it describes life as a " brief mist which quickly passes " . Well,

that was it, this " brief mist " was going to get normal boobs before she

passes! Insurance would NOT dictate to me how to live my precious, fragile

and too brief life.

It was my " Aha Moment " !

16 grand to not have flapping and pulling and strain on back. 16 grand

including hospital, professionals to watch over you, anes dr, plast sur doc,

all surgery and follow up visits:

16 grand, the price of a very small compact car brand new. 16 grand, less

than the price of one year at Harvard, short by about 15 grand. 16 grand,

the

price of 3 airplane trips to disney land for a family of five. 16 grand, the

price of all new kitchen cabinets and counters and installation for a small

a

9x11 kitchen. 16 grand, the price of adding two bathrooms (maybe). 16 grand,

the price of a 100 sq foot office (10x10)for one year in Midtown Manhattan

if

such existed (they don't). 16 grand the price of 4 years of very good season

tickets (for four) to 'the' performing arts theatre in any large city. 16

grand, sixteen years of one pack of cigarettes a day by those who smoke. 16

grand, 10 years of one cocktail per day at local yokel saloon. 16 grand,

buying 10 new books a year for sixty years, or 20 for 30. 16 grand, the

price

of 320 running feet of wrought iron fence, (plain), enough to fence one lot

100x125 (maybe). 16 grand, the cost of builiding a brick wall with brick

pillars across the front of your house (includes excavation, forms and

cement

footer. Diggers, extra) People do all kinds of home improvement. It is said

that the body is the temple. Have mercy on it. The money is not the most

important factor. The mercy is. As YOU see it. No one else. Just you.

Just one more thought: Your health is important. Your mind is part of your

health. People buy cars worth twice and three tmes as much as 16 grand, and

the machine only lasts 5-6 years for most. The body lasts far longer for far

less investment. This is not to say rush right out and be frivolous about

this or life in general; it is just to say that the body is precious and it

deserves a good caregiver who is bold and weighs risks versus benefit and

acts accordingly.

In case anyone wonders, I have had no plastics. Still flapping in the wind.

But I see people here as heroic on most days and feel strongly that people

ought have whatever is in their reach that will allow them to let go of

their

concerns and give their time to other matters as well.

Carol,

Your post had me in tears. It was so moving. A lesson to all of us to
