Guest guest
Kristy, are you already taking a B-12 supplement? My B-12 dropped fairly low (but still normal). I was down to about 300 at my 18 month blood tests. Started taking the sub-lingual B-12/B6/Folic combo, and the 2 year labs were back up to about 600. Guest guest
Someone in my local support group has lost most of her vision thanks to a B vitamin deficiency. They think that she had a genetic tendency not to use / absorb vitamin B adequately. Even though the problem was genetic, I always wonder if it might have something to do with her bypass. Another person in my support group came up with a really weird neurological problem, which is usually found in old alcoholics. It was also related to vitamin B deficiency. They think that she had a genetic tendency not to absorb B vitamins and then the surgery sort of accelerated the problem. She hadn't been taking her vitamins, but she was so recently post-up it's hard to imagine that she didn't have a problem before then. I found something in the scientific literature about a British woman who had a bypass and developed something similar. Kristy, it's wonderful that you went to your checkup and discovered this problem early!!! I'm surprised at the number of people I run across who won't take their vitamin and mineral supplements and won't go to follow-up exams. So many of the problems with this surgery can be managed easily if they're caught early. One of the signs of B deficiency is mental confusion, so we shouldn't count on our ability to notice that something's wrong. in St. Louis Nice soap box - hey you can see my house from here! p.s. To lurking pre-ops - this surgery has been wonderful for me. Taking vitamins and seeing a doctor once a year is a small price to pay.
