Greetings Trudi!

I would use GREAT caution with vitamins. Take the one a day type. No more.

There are also numerous scientific studies that show mega doses of vitamins

can hurt health - not improve it. But making it worse, most MSA patients

have extremely sensitive systems. So, mega dosing would only make matters

worse.

. Sam takes 2000 units of Vitamin E each day at the neuro's

suggestion--isn't sure, but said it might help. Have you heard

this? Thanks, Lou R.At 09:22 AM 3/6/2002 -0500, you wrote:

My brother's neuro also recommended Vitamin E -- which is the only thing she

did recommend although she conceded that CoEnzyme CoQ10 probably wouldn't

hurt anything and could be beneficial. I believe the Vitamin E

recommendation has to do with the current thinking that the whole

alpha-synuclein issue has a strong connection to oxidation. Given that line

of thought, a case could probably be made that an adequate intake of all the

anti-oxidant vitamins could be benefical to MSA patients.

Lou,

There have been studies which show that 400 IU of vitamin E per day can help the

heart. A study of 1200 IU of vitamin E per day yielded the same heart results.

I have also seen studies which show 3000 IU of vitamin E per day can cause

unwanted side effects. I am sure if your neuro has suggested it, they must have

checked it out. There have been studies that have suggested that antioxidents

MAY help slow the progression of brain cell death, but early studies on

seliguine

suggested that it might slow brain cell death also and that seems to be falling

out of favor these days. They are also doing studies on another antioxident

called CoQ10 to see if it may help.

As long as the neurologist is watching him and has suggested it, I would go with

it. My cardiologist has me on 400 IU of vitamin E per day also. If my mechanic

(Certified) tells me to replace a fan belt, I do it. Been five years since my

car broke down on the road.

Take care, Bill Werre

Well, I guess we will continue with the vitamin E until told to do

otherwise, and he also takes selegeline--now onto 6 years. We surely can't

figure out what helps him and what does not--there seem to be few drastic

reactions one way or the other. So it goes. Thanks. Lou R.At 09:55

Lou,

I'm not a MSA patient but a caregiver and I have to take B12 shots every 2

months. I started out once a month but it evidently got better and now only

every 2 months. I was told I had the deficiency too.
