Chrissie -- I hope I am not about to offend someone (you) whom I respect a

lot, but I have to differ with just a few points you made, most notably the

above. In general you raise good points. However, some people cannot

afford food. They get food stamps, and receive their health services

through

medicare/medicaid. Food stamps don't cover protein supps, and

medicare/medicaid does not cover vitamins, prescriptions or OTC stuff. I

don't want to live in a country where lifesaving surgery is denied for

financial reasons. In these extreme cases, I believe it IS incumbent upon

the medical profession to be better educators than they normally are, and

proactively. And I believe it is incumbent upon legislators to make sure

that one's basic living requirements can be met either through one's income

or if that is impossible, then through subsidy programs. (This is not about

our various feelings on a " welfare state... " let's assume we are only

talking

about cases we all agree to be validly needy.) To say they should not have

had surgery in the first place is, to me, like denying any dying person

medical services because of financial status, which as we all know, can also

be affected/caused by super morbid obesity.

I doubt there are many such cases, and do not disagree that money is often

an

excuse. For the most part, we all prioritize. <
