Guest guest
Sam had leg spasms in both legs and one arm the other day--not the kind that comes and goes, just constant, especially if I touched him. It lasted a while, and he has not had them since. The doctor said to take two 8 oz glasses of tonic water a day--it contains quinine. I don't know whether that is why the spasms have not recurred, or it was a passing thing, or is the harbinger of things to come. He could not get out of bed. I hope things improve. Has anyone found Valium to be of any benefit to quell the " uptightness' " that goes with this disorder? I took V. 30+ years ago and found it helped me with tension headaches etc. but my medic is reluctant to give it now. I think Valium has a bad name for various reasons but I'd like to give it a try if I thought I'd get any relief. Is there any other med besides Baclfen that helps leg spasms? I don't mean tremors........these are hard tightening 'seizures " usually in only one leg at a time that occur every 5-10 seconds. Can be relieved somewhat be getting up and walking about. Any comments would be appreciated. Guest guest
This is Barb in Arlington. Ralph had terrible leg spasms that would make him fall to the floor, they hurt so bad. He took calcium tablets and a bit of potassium and they eased up. When he was low on either one, they came back. He would cry out in pain some times. Misery, as I can testify to. I got them when I was playing soft ball and had to wait and cool down and then keep my calcium level up. Sliced oranges were a stand by thing in our packs to keep us going. They hurt, and not all of the patients can walk them out or press to the wall while standing within reach of the wall. I find leaning into the wall as I face it, helps get the cramp out. Just don't get the nose into the wall, that can hurt too. It makes the legs so sore when the cramp is gone. Have a good one all you folks who are miserable tonight. There is always hope for a good tomorrow. Barb. Guest guest
Barb, Rob has been prescribed very small doses of klonipin for the " uptightness " that occurs with MSA. HE seldom takes it, but when he does it seems to help. Carol & Rob > > > My most bothersome symptom is leg spasms. Guest guest
Barb Pond, I am not a patient but a caregiver, I used to get what I called " charlie horses " tightening of the calf muscle at night. My Dr. gave me quinine and believe me it worked. I tried to not take it two nights and had very tight spasms so now I don't go to be without it. Ask your Dr. S. Med for leg spasms > > > My most bothersome symptom is leg spasms.
