Dumb of me to ask this...but...here goes....If they got dense, which they

did....how did the actual BONES get " undense??? "

Barb B.

If we go to the gym and lift weights and get big muscles, to keep them we would

have to continue to lift the weights right? If we went to the gym and only

lifted half the weight, the muscles would shrink.

Our bone density is the same way, especially when we hit age 30-40-50+, and then

add malabsorbing calcium to it. We were carrying around all this weight on our

bones and got great bone density, then had surgery and lost weight, and, at

least I, didn't think to go to the gym and lift weights to keep my bone density.

Over time (as little as 1-2 years) since the bones weren't supporting as much

weight they didn't need to remain as dense and they lost density (just like the

muscle above). Now, since we have difficultly absorbing calcium due to the

surgery, this adds to our dilemma.

The real question isn't how they got " undense " , its how to keep them dense, or

" re-densify " them.

1. Learn from those of us who didn't learn quickly enough and now are paying the

price. I love softball, and was really looking forward to a summer of (combat)

softball (sliding is the best part), but now will probably not be playing, as

the fracture risk is just too high.

2. Take your calcium I won't start another calcium war, they have already been

had. I advocate calcium citrate and have stated my peace. Just take something,

and take lots of it, and don't take it with any other minerals.

3. Do weight bearing exercise. swimming doesn't count.(sorry) walking, weight

lifting, jogging, roller skating, you get the idea--most likely you have to be

standing up.

4. Get your dexascan once a year, and do it the same month each year, as the

results will vary depending on the amount of sun you have been exposed to.

I'll get off my soap box now...... Doc carolyn

Yoga, like Pilates, is considered weight-bearing because you use your own

body weight as resistance.

I guess this might be a matter of opinion, just like calcium tends to be.

but my orthopedic doc said that yoga, pilates, swimming and a host of other

things I enjoy is NOT weight bearing.

Sorry for the delay in answering, I was oot all weekend with Girl Scouts--

shopping at Mall of America. It was almost too much of a good thing....

Magnesium is a mineral, but you should take magnesium WITH calcium. Avoid iron,

mutli-vitamins, and things or this nature with your calcium.

I am not sure if yoga counts as weight bearing exercise, but I would suspect

that you can still walk with your hernias. We can butn the same amount of energy

in one mile whether we walk it or run it, the difference is in the amount of

time it takes to complete it.
