Vitamins and supplements -- questions

More questions. I keep printing things out and reading them. But I am

finding that they are giving me questions.

For instance:

1) What is elemental calcium? How does that differ from citrate and

caltrate? I know how citrate and caltrate differ from my readings but a

definition of elemental calcium would be helpful.

2) Vitamin A -- what is the difference between palmitate and beta carotene

forms? I read that Palmitate form can be toxic at high levels but beta

carotene can not. Is it that the body makes Vitamin A from beta carotene?

3)What does water soluble mean? And fat soluble? Is that where the vitamins

are stored (well in the case of water they are flushed from the system)?

Definitions please. I am trying to figure it out and while I may understand

the gist of what is being said I like understanding all the terms. Pardon my

ignorance here. But I want to know and not just parrot what others say. I

have been doing a lot of research and these are things that are confusing

me.

******* beta carotene is the kind found in carrots. We cannot OD in that

form. I have not yet found that one supplementally. Retinol is the

supplemental form, in dry caps, anyway., That one CAN be toxic, hence

frequent labs. I'd have to have books handy for Palmitate

> ******** Hmm. Not much for descriptions, but picture the diff between oil

& water on a glass of water? Water soluble means it will mingle totally with

water(based substances). Oil soluble is similar but in oily based

substances. I believe that the fat solubles are converted to a more useful

form at the duodenum. No duodenum, no conversion, Hence, why we supplement

these in a " the converted " form

************ I am bookless on the road here. I know what I mean, as clear

as it can be, but I'm not sure I can define it. A physiology book will

tell you what is absorbed where, but not WHY or how to get it if that part

is missing.

Not to argue with you but I read in the ADA's book of nutrition that it is

possible to overdose on vitamin C. If you take too much you can get

diarrhea, rebound scruvy (when you stop talking it high amounts and try to

return your body to normal), crazy menses cycles and kidney stones. So even

if water soluble it is possible to get toxic amounts apparently. At least

according to what i read in the American Dietetics Association's nutrition

book.

The fat soluable vitamins are A,D,E, and K. They are found in fat and

that is how they get into the body as well as where they are stored in the

body. We can keep a reserve of the fat soluables stored for use as needed.

The other vitamins need to be ingested on a daily basis as they are not

stored . . . We can also " overdose " or get toxic levels of the fat sol

vitamins, but not so this the water soluable vitamins . . .
