I am gonna jump way outta my league here and venture onto the claimed turf of

others. Forthwith I admit I am not really qualified to speak on anything other

than my own adventures or misadventures as it may be post op.

Here is what I know about me. I am a proximal RNY accomplished via the open

method, about 75cm or so. I have supplemented like a distal since about three

months post op. I have lots of ups and downs that could be thrown in here since

May of 2000 when I had this procedure.

Bottom line here is that I know this: When I do enough shakes (30g max at once)

per day to keep my supplemental intake beyond 90g per day (would hope for five,

but I am rarely that disciplined), I do not make such horrendous choices in

food. In other words when I consistently keep the protein supplement up, I eat

better and weight gain is not such an issue. Sometimes I think the weight gain

is not as fearful and the incessant hunger when I eat trash foods (salty junky

white flour milky yeck stuff that I crave but makes me eat like a madman).

I have read many a debate about how many calories a 30g shake has (I make mine

the Vitalady way, wee bit O water, some ice, shake and down the hatch) in

conjunction with the food ingested. Just seems to work well for me that when I

do what I know I should, I do just fine, and do not gain and actually lose and

lose the hunger munchies that drive me nuts. When I don't (forget the calorie

count) I eat like a trash mouth and suffer the appropriate consequences.

At the risk of entering the good - evil foods fray, I will just add that when I

do the protein and lay off the dairy, I eat less of the foods that are evil FOR

ME. When I slack on the protein supps, the opposite. So for me protein supps

are a good calorie source and work to help me circumvent the EVIL ones for me.

Karan,

I suggest you head over to the OSSG-Protein site for more great

info! I will tell you that some are finding that the Pre-made shakes

don't keep the labs up like the " mix it yourself " powders. I posted

my regimen, (and other protein addicts have posted theirs recently

too)last week to that site. Search the files and database for

recipes and protein info. Also, we did a poll when the site first

began, asking folks which shake they preferred, as well as why they

began the shakes to begin with. The results are all there for your

enjoyment! Hope this helps:

Much love,
