Hi Tina (and interested others),

Am here in Los Mochis, Sinaloa on a vacation with my

Mexican friends and thought I´d give a bit of a

response to your query.

Los Mochis is an agricultural town sort of like

Fresno. Lots of folks go from here to the US as

farmworkers or as other types of laborers. There is

not the big emptying out like other towns in Mexico

but still there is plent of " intercambio " .

To my dismay Mcs has arrived to Los Mochis.

Although most of my Mexican brothers (adults, the

youngest of whom is 32) would not be caught dead

eating a Big Mac, all of their kids are really into

it. I guess kid oriented marketing is an

international " sucess " . :(

Of interest (I hope) is that EVERYBODY here who talks

about Mcs and similar types of American food

purveyers notes that the food is fattening and not

healthy food. So, in terms of public health analysis

of the awareness of individuals and groups, there is,

at least among this group of Mexicans in Mexico, an

awareness that that kind of food is not good for you.

It may also be of interest that the vast majority of

the people in Los Mochis do not show the kind of

obesity that you see in the U.S. The majority of

" Sinaloenses " are slender or at least relatively slim.

OK, it is getting to be time for la comida. ¿Nos veos

en Sacramento en Febrero, no?

(Troidl)

Ruiz is the family name of the folks I visit with here

in Mexico.

Hello Tina - Joanne Ikeda, a Nutritionist with the University of

California, published a report in 1990 summarizing her findings of a

prospective survey of immigrant farm workers' dietary behaviors after

migration from Mexico to Tulare County, California. She found a

deterioration of diet over the multi-year period subsequent to

migration. The reference is as follows:

Joanne Ikeda, " Food Habits of Farmworker Families. Tulare

County, California. 1989, " University of California Extension

Service, 1990.

Second, in my report on the California Agricultural Worker Health Survey,

conducted by the California Institute for Rural Studies during 1999,

" Suffering In Silence, " we found a significantly higher

prevalence of obesity among hired farm workers in California in all age

cohorts as compared with the U.S. population or compared with U.S.

Mexican-Americans in general.

Also, my most recent report on the CAWHS finds, in all age cohorts, that

recent migrant workers from Mexico had a lower prevalence of obesity as

compared with those who had been living and working in the U.S. for a

longer period of time.

Information about both reports can be found on my new personal web site,

including information about downloading Exec Summaries or, in the case of

the first report, the entire document from the web. The new web

site URL is:

Barbara Cote' @ (616)393-5775

We surveyed migrant farmworkers in Ottawa County, Michigan for their fruit

& vegetable and fast food intake (209 surveys). We are still entering the

data, but I would appreciate sharing resources with you once we have

analysis.
