Guest guest
A little in put from the Central Valley, some of the farrmworkers already here and also arriving from Oaxaca also tend to work row crops, such as hoeing, weeding and some of the harvesting during the summer too. We have quite a high rate of Oaxacans here in Madera and Fresno County. V. Sandoval Consultant ACSA/INTRASE 15463 W. Guest guest
While I am not aware of statistics in Napa, Sonoma Counties (California), our observations are as follows: - "migrant workers" are increasingly newcomers (many times straight from Mexico (more and more from Oaxaca) who obtain work in the grape fields (wine) and immediately seek work in higher paying jobs (usually construction). - These folks, along with already established workers, will often take jobs in low-paying restaurant work (including fast food establishments where documentation is provided) during non-harvest times and become "seasonal" farmworkers during the harvest and even permanent workers at vineyards/wineries. ----- Original Message ----- From: Tina Castanares Migrant Health Research egroup Sent: Sunday, January 06, 2002 9:38 PM Subject: [ ] postscript In addition to the message I sent to the listserv earlier tonight: I'd also like to ask once again for any information regarding overlap of workforces -- farmworkers who also work in the meat, poultry, or seafood industries, or in fast food restaurants. All data or even impressions/observations appreciated. Thanks again. Tina Tina Castañares, MDCastañares Consulting637 Highway 141, White Salmon, WA 98672509 493-1600 voice and faxtina.castanares@... Guest guest
Tina, I'm referring you to McCauley, PhD epidemiologist at OHSU. Her research group has been doing projects regarding pesticide exposure among MSFWs and I believe she discovered quite a number of migrant workers employed in the fish processing plants along the Oregon coast. her email address is: mccauley@....
