Guest guest
: If I knew there were someone like you for me as a personal trainor, you can bet that I would consider joing the gym. I don't bother because I think I would get somekinda no pain no gain type that would do me more harm than good. Guest guest
Fay, I had this same fear but decided it was more important to my health to try and find someone I could work with successfully. So I started out by signing up for a community offered class at the local Gold's gym for Pilates (cause my skinny friend has been raving about it and she had never exercised as she also felt intimidated). And even though I couldn't and 6 weeks later still can't keep up with the instructor or some of the others in the class, I found great support. There are 2 instructors who both have fabulous bodies but both have been very supportive. They come over and help me get the right position and always show beginner levels through advanced and say to the whole class just do what you can do and then rest and come back in when you can. I have talked to them both after class and told her my situation of WLS. And they have just told me to keep coming back and over time I will gain the muscle strength to keep up. Since starting this class, I actually joined the gym and got a personal trainer for a few weeks. I talked to the director when I joined and told her my fear of being intimidated or not understood for my particular needs. And she said she would hook me up with a trainer that would not make me feel out of place. And that's exactly what I got. The trainer, who has been a gym rat all her life, was completely understanding and helped me work out a program that I can live with now and build on in the future. So I guess my advice to all of us who need and want to overcome this fear to get into a good exercise routine is to be honest when we go in and ask for open minded support. Maybe I was just fortunate in finding it. But I have come to see that a major part of the clients at my gym are middle aged men and women who just want to get healthy. The young body builders seem to go elsewhere or they stick to themselves in one corner of the gym. But I have met some wonderful people and strike up conversations with them all the time and have found most are like me just trying to get back their health and lose those last stubborn pounds. Its up to us to educate those we come into contact with to dispel the myths and the label about obesity. Hope you find someplace that will help you do that.
