Maggie:

When Fred first went to a urologist for his frequency and urgency , he was put on flomax. The doctor did blood work often to make sure that there wasn't any other problem going on that was caused by the flomax. Even being on the flomax he still had problems with the bladder. Then his new urologist took him off the flomax and on a cathater. This has worked alot better then the flomax did. I'm sorry that he didn't have this at the first.

It really keeps us on our toes, doesn't it?

Subject: Frequency and urgency

Just a short note to share with you about a visit to 's urologist

yesterday. He (the doctor) knows totally about 's PD diagnosis,

the probable (but not stated) Shy Drager diagnosis, about his OH

and he knows all the medications takes....still with all this info he

prescribed Flomax. Since he was also the doctor that had prescribed Detrol

(which put in the hospital with his last OH episode after only one

dose!) we knew to ask questions when we went to our WONDERFUL pharmacist

who refused to fill the script, based on our questions and looking at the

indications and side effects for Flomax. His further research prompted a

call back letting us know that ALL the medications currently on the market

for urinary frequency, urgency and incontinence should NEVER be prescribed

for or taken by a person who has OH or fluctuating/low blood pressure.

Of course our experience, in no way, should override each individuals

personal quest for better health, but does at least provide a basis for

asking questions about medications commonly prescribed for some of the

additional symptoms related to MSA/Shy Drager/PD etc.; and their possible

side effects.

Hi, When Leo first had problems with urination (could not) he started cathing and put him on Levsin 125mg 4 times a day plus Imipramine 10mg 2 times a day. He said if we did not stop the bladder contractions his kidneys would be damaged. When I started trying to get all his meds coordinated the neurologist changed him to detrol 2mg tabs 2 times a day because it was more bladder specific and was not available when he was put on the other meds. So far we have not had any problems, he has been taking detrol abt 18 mos. Ginger
