Guest guest
My question is: have any of you attended this conference as I was just told by my surgeon's nurse that she and the surgeon attended this conference and the general consensus was that Flinstones was the best vitamin. Is this true? I was telling her all I have learned and she came back with this....Flinstones and Tums as they attended the nutritional workshops or whatever there at the conference and this is what they recommended along with 76 grams of protein a day, a maximum of 30 grams of fat, and 100 carbs. IF this is true, boy, am I way off base, ha ha. I just wondered if anyone here attended any nutritional workshops there that discussed vitamins and nutrition and what you learned. What is the ASBS and are they THE authorities on post op patients? Anyone know?

Surgeons (and most other m.d.'s are notoriously lacking in nutritional knowledge). What's even funnier, to me, is that they spout all kinds of stuff based on what works for normies, instead of what works for bypass patients. Get good advice from people who've been there, and adjust it for your own situation. Proximals don't have the same problems as distals. DS'ers and RNY'ers react differently to some things. Check out the sources people cite and read them in the original. And insist on getting ALL the proper labs (I had to go to SIX docs b4 I found one I could convince that it was a good idea 2b tested for vitamin deficiencies/ toxicities) on a regular basis. Make sure YOU get your own copies, and keep a running tally yourself so u can see if things are going up or down. Oh, and know the difference what up or down means. In some things up is good and down is bad, in others it's vice versa. Depend on YOURSELF to catch trends and/or problems. Your doc most likely isn't going to keep a running tab like u do and things can easily fall between the crax that way. Guest guest
The ASBS is the American Society of Bariatric Surgeons. They are not a governing board, so being listed or not does not necessarily make your surgeon good or bad (on that criteria). I've attended 3 yrs. There was about an hour on the actual " best ideas " , and I have it here. It definitely states calcium CITRATE as the best source, of calcium. However, it then lists 4 brand names of carbonate sources. (???) The conference focuses on techniques, new products (like stapling devices, beds) & such for the surgeons & hands-on medical people. There is a side segment that discusses nutrition briefly (yes, many of us would like to see this one grow & be more up to date), but in general, how to run a successful Bariatric practice. This conference is not really for or about patients. It's about being on the OTHER side of the desk, or stapler, if you will. Hopefully, some day, there will be a conference BY patients, FOR patients and ABOUT patients and issue such as aftercare. Not theories from the Ivory Tower, but real life, how-to-do-it stuff. Are they The Authorities on post-op patients? Thanks, Vitalady T www.vitalady.com ASBS Conference > My question is: have any of you attended this conference as I was > just told by my surgeon's nurse that she and the surgeon attended > this conference and the general consensus was that Flinstones was the > best vitamin. Guest guest
Ah, and wouldn't it be wonderful if all our surgeons would attend? But, that's just a dream. in NJ ******************************************* In a message dated 9/13/2002 12:26:43 AM Eastern Daylight Time, vitalady@... writes: > Hopefully, some day, there will be a conference BY patients, FOR patients > and ABOUT patients and issue such as aftercare.
