Guest guest
hmmm.. my guess is that the weight gain might have a little more to do with 800 calories per roast beef sandwich than a protein shake.. IMHO Message: 14 Date: Tue, 08 Oct 2002 13:25:35 -0500 Subject: Re: protein suggestions I am a little over two years post op. I do not take any protein supplements unless I want to gain weight. I get all my protein from food. I eat a lot of yogurt and Arby Roast Beef sandwiches. Guest guest
If protein shakes are made with water and ice, and not lots of added sugars like milk and fruit, they will NOT put weight on. If you're using the proteins designed for weight gain, then you'll put on weight. Since you're so " into " research, perhaps you should consider looking into physiology and anatomy and you'll see why it's physically impossible for us to get enough protein from food. We can't digest it because our stomach acid is in the lower portion of the stomach, so even the most proximal of proximals can not absorb a reliable amount of protein. With the restriction of the tiny pouch, it would seem ridiculous to me to try to stuff in enough food to get enough protein for my body to live on. I don't think that even if I ate constantly, I would get adequate protein. ------------------------------------------------ Terry Mayers 5DollarHosting.comT http://www.5dollarhosting.com (877)-838-HOST / .... because it shouldn't cost a fortune to make a fortune! ® > I am a little over two years post op. Guest guest
Terry, I have to disagree with you on proximals and protein. I know lots of my surgeon's post-op folks who are 2-5 years out and a few who are 5-10 years post and who NEVER do protein shakes who are quite healthy with good lab work and so forth. If they weren't absorbing any protein in their intestines, they would be in deep trouble or dead after that many years, and clearly they are not. Dr. Weber's been doing RNY for more than 15 years and doesn't require his folks to use protein shakes though he thinks they're fine if people like them, and the vast majority of his patients lose most of their excess weight and live in good health eating just normal food. I'm a 125cm medial and I DO consume protein shakes, because I think it's easier on my system, but I disagree with your statements. The stomach acid IS in the lower part of the stomach, but it does mix with the food in the small intestine and it can be absorbed there. Additionally, chewing food thoroughly in your mouth mixes it with saliva which is the first component of digestion. With 125cm bypassed, I have about 575cm left for digestion and absorption and my protein levels are fine with one or two shakes a day. Guest guest
I've never done a protein shake in my life and my protein labs are perfect and I have been at 145 lbs goal for 10 months. My doc doesn't allow us to do shakes, he does believe in them and well I say to eat his own. They don't turn me on.... I guess I don't need them either. I would say I would have to fully disagree also !
