bladder infection and bleeding

Hi All,

My dad has been in and out of the hospital over the past two weeks. It

started with an episode of non-responsiveness and lethargy. My mom brought

him in to the ER. They initially thought it was an overdose to the drug he

uses to stop drooling (the one where you put drops under the tongue).

However, the symptoms didn't match up. Initial testing of urine revealed no

infection; subsequent test a couple of days later revealed bladder infection.

(My thought is that it was a bladder infection all along; doctors say that

bladder infection doesn't cause such symptoms. Big surprise to this group,

huh!)

He was in hospital for five days with catheter. Changed his antibiotic once

while in hospital and once since discharge. Over past few days he has had

blood and blood clots in his urine. He went back to ER last night where they

hooked him up to irrigate his bladder. I understand this went on for several

hours and is still on-going. There is still blood.

What are the group's thoughts? Is bleeding like this normal after cathing?

with infection? Could infection be causing bleeding? Any tips or treatments

that we should be talking to medical staff about?
