Guest guest
hI. I have read alot of the posts on low iron and supplementation. I had an transected proximal rny in 99, lost 60 lbs. in 6 months and plateaued for the rest of the year. I am 5'1 1/2 " and weighed 230 pre-op. I am a type 2 diabetic who had very uncontrollable sugars and to be placed on insulin unless I lost a significant amt. of weight. Also had a couple other co-morb. I thought i was doing well with the 60 lbs. in 6 months but my surgeon Dr. said i was 20 lbs. behind. I remember losing only 6 at my 10 day appt. and the staff none too happy of my loss. We were required to eat all protein until we lost 85% of our weight. I was having so much diarrhea, that I added a small baked [potato] to see if that would help. So the Dr. tells me that is what caused the weight gain, and lack of weight loss. I also had alot of vomiting, but continued to get my protein in. There was alot of confusion and miscommunication about my diabetes meds. I was to be off of them. Well I never totally lost the diabetes and continued the meds and increased them when needed per my endocrinologist. So after my fisrt year and alot of plateauing I was very frusdtrated. I started to drink with my meals, graze when I was hungry, which was most of the time. So I have gained back 30 lbs. I always felt that something was wrong with my pouch because when i got my act together I lost a couple of pounds. my first UGI showed my ring loose and the opening large. I have gone to three different DR.'s to learn about revisions. The distal gastric bypass was told to me as well as the duodinal switch. So in May, 02 I went to Miss. to meet with Dr. Booth looking for options. He did a endoscope and my 2nd UGI. The UGI showed mynpouch was intact, stoma enlarged, and the pouch was overflowing and creating a small stomach resting on the small bowel. There was no evidence of the ring. The Dr. told me the endoscopy showed 2 large mucosal ulcers high up in the esophagus and spasms. He said i would have to be followed by my gastro guy. When the endo report came in the Dr. in Miss. said the report was worrisome because they saw some changes in my cells. So I made the appt. with the nurse practitioner who gave me nexium to try. But this all started with me checking my hemaglobin abd seein it was 9.4. Today it was 11.5. So slowly it is coming. But my question is, do you think they will let me have a revision with a longer rou limb and malabsorption when I have some potential problems with the iron being low? I know I have a bettwer chance of a distal gatric bypass being paid for vs the ds. I will see the gastr guy next week and hope to understand the more. The surg. in Miss, said that people eventually become immune to the iron and iron inj. or Iv's and eventually some people hasve to have their surg. reversed to put things back in order. I am scared because I don;t know if I will have to do that. I did make some mistakess, but i also did alot of things good. Thanks for listening. Any suggestions?
