Guest guest
A staple line disruption is more associated with the VBG than the RNY and BPD/DS. Then the primary symptom is that you are able to eat too much. Leaving vitamin and mineral adequacy considerations aside, the much more likely cause for you to feel " miserable " is that either the stoma (the connection between the gastric pouch and the intestine) is too small or you have some kind of small bowel obstruction. The small bowel obstruction can come from an adhesion growing over the connection at the " Y " junction or the bowel physically kinking up. There is also the possibility of a large bowel obstruction. The latter is usually due to inadequate ruffage in the diet. See your physician to rule these possibilities out. Guest guest
I am a proximal RNY and had a staple line disruption at 7 months out and had revision where he transected my stomach that time. Six hour surgery, but well worth it. SLD can and does happen to just about anyone. Just be careful. Regina Block

Guest guest
I don't see where we can avoid SLD. Mine was at 5 yrs. Most of my peers were by 2 yrs. I really don't think any of us out ate it. I had acid/reflux/heartburn again. Suddenly. Had ulcer symptoms (mule kicked me in the pouch, constant hunger--not real, but just as my real life ulcers had behaved--all that acid imitated hunger. Put food in, get relief for 10 min) I could not eat appreciably more. I didn't gain wt until the last month or so. Waited 4 months for my paperwork to lose itself and find its way to the correct desk. How do > you know you have it besides eating more? > > Zoe ******************************* The symptoms vary from person to person. I had no other signs, really, but had acid reflux and associated pains again. My only gripe with my original surgeon, whom I love, is that he still doesn't transect, nor do many others who have done thousands of these surgeries. I just don't get it. But, for those pre-ops or newbies who have or will have transected stomachs, if you are going to have a SLD, it will almost always occur immediately after surgery. When the stomach tissue is cut (as opposed to just stapled or stitched), scar tissue begins to form immediately to heal the trauma, just like when you cut your finger. That's why SLD's with transected stomachs happen during or right after surgery. I'm just explaining this to allay the fears of newbies who might be scared & can't yet post. As for SLD's on those further out, DON'T buy into that crap when doctor's say it's your fault if the staple line blows. It's NOT!!! It's a mechanical failure. One surgeon explained to me that sometimes the stomach tissue just rejects the staples. Think about it, the body is doing what it's supposed to by rejecting foreign objects. Unfortunately, many people live for years blaming themselves for a regain, never even thinking it could be mechanical because of the bullsh*t some surgeons lay on us about being a failure. Anyway, nuff said. in NJ

Guest guest
Ray, I would really appreciate if the report whose purpose is to non-promote a very particular brand of calcium would be made available on an as " requested privately basis. " All of our 2500-plus members aren't remotely interested. If we don't allow promotion of a particular brand, why should we allow trashing a particular brand? Maybe you could say you have it if anyone wants to see it and you could then email it to them privately and NOT subject the rest of us to something we absolutely do not care about anymore. I didn't start this board or work on it every morning and night for people to overtly promote, or overtly " promote by detraction " any commercial products. This has gone from " I like Post Pop-tarts better than Kellogg Pop-tarts " or " I found new protein-enriched edible panties " and has become what I perceive to be a veiled commercial endeavor. This just ain't the place and we all know it. Like any really cares at this point, articles on what is or what is not RDA/DV may be appropriate. What the hell does a lab analysis of a particular brand have to do with anything if DV or RDA is the only issue? Please, no answer is necessary. LET IT GO! Thanks, in Austin RNY April 1998 P.S. I'd avoid surgery in Lubbock.
