Guest guest
Hello Everyone, Today is my 1 year anniversary!! I had RNY Gastric Bypass surgery on Aug.27,2001 at the St. Carmel Hospital in Indiana with Dr. RoseMarie . This has been an incredible year! I am 5'1 " , my highest weight was 280 Lbs. and I was 269 Lbs. at the time of surgery. I had obstructive sleep apnea and had to use a CPAP machine for 8 years whenever I slept at all. I was taking medication for diabieties , I had such back pain that I could not grocery shop without using one of those electric carts, I was short of breath and basically I had no life. Now the sleep apnea is completely gone, I don't take any medication for diabietes, I have no more back pain or shortness of breath and can hike and walk to my hearts content. I have lost 140 Lbs total and have reached my surgeons goal for me, however, I am still slowly losing and my personal goal is to maintain at 120 LBS. I had some minor set backs when I developed an ulcer in January and began to be able to eat and drink less and less. I had no pain with it but it got to the point where I could neither eat or drink anything. Then they performed an endoscopy and found the ulcer. By that time I needed to have a pic line put in my arm and was given interveinous nutrition every night for the next 2 months. Again it didn't hurt it just made me very weak from not eating. Now, for the last few months I have developed what I term my mystery pain that feels just like a gallbladder attack except it can't be from my gallbladder because it was removed at the same time I had GB. So now I am schuduled for an MRI on Thursday night to see if they can tell what is wrong. As I understand it they are looking to see if there is a gallstone in the duct somewhere. The only thing is, this pain is not constant but only comes after eating or drinking something and sometimes it is only once a day, sometimes several times a day and sometimes several days go by without any pain. I had tried keeping track of what I've eaten to see what might be causing it but one day I'll eat something and no pain the next day I'll eat the same thing and pow the pain comes back. It only lasts for between 5 to 30 minutes at a time. Go figure. If it's not a gallstone they think it may be spasms of the sphincter at the end of the bile duct. In either case they are talking surgery to fix the problem. Anyway that's my 1 year story. I thank God for giving me my life back and I am going to use it for whatever He wants me to do. As far as having RNY I don't regret it for 1 minute. I have lurked here on this list for about 2 years now and have learned a great deal. I want to thank all of you for all the things you share. I probably will continue just to lurk most of the time and to learn from you who have gone before. Sherry R.
