Guest guest
I had the test a few weeks ago for the very same reason. I wanted to know how the staple line was doing and since I had experienced a gain of 20 lbs over the years 2 and 3 I wanted to know what was going on. Here is what happened.... After going through registration, they had me get rid of the clothes and put on the " wonderful " hospital gown. I sat in a small waiting area while they checked my vitals and then brought me into a small room with a lot of instruments and hospital gourney . The nurse told me that they were going to give me some medicine intravenously to make me groggy and that I would not remember much about the procedure when it was over. I have to admit that I was, at this point, shaking like a leaf, not knowing what to expect. They hooked up the i.v. and the next thing that I can remember is waking up and vaguely feeling like I was swallowing something that was causing me to belch. I remember seeing the doctor that was conducting the procedure standing next to me and his nurse. I belched a few more times and went back into dreamland. After that I remember with clarity was being wheeled into the recovery area. I felt great. A little groggy but clear headed and ready to jump off the bed and leave. The nurses advised me to lay there a while and rest. I rested and chatted with my husband who was waiting for me there. After about an hour, I was told the results of the test and allowed to dress and leave. BTW, my staple line was intact and everything appeared to be fine. Because of the anesthesia, my husband was there to drive me home. It was a lot easier to deal with than I had imagined. Hope this helps! This followed a brief bout of stomach upset. I went to see the surgeon. He asked me if I *thought* anything was wrong, and I asked him the very same thing. I've gained 15 pounds this year, although I look better and still wear the same pant size. I've been working HARD with a trainer 3X a week and he just laughs and says that of course I'm going to gain if I'm building muscle. I was able to lose an entire FIVE of those pounds in the last two weeks by merely cutting out the two latte's I was having daily made with half 'n half. We don't get the fat, but we damn sure do get the sugar! Anyway, I'm not convinced anything is wrong except my head. I'm on the fence about canceling the procedure (barium swallow) but also feel like at 4 plus years, why not check the staple line. He said that's what this test is for...just to see if it's intact. I think it's my head playing tricks, but this may help my head.
