Guest guest
This is a subject pretty close to my heart.... or at least my kidneys I've had a series of stones since my WLS. Recently I met with a nephrologist (kidney doctor) that blamed the stones on Short Gut Syndrome (i.e. my WLS - duh!!!! They started 6 weeks after my surgery). Anyway... After an analysis of my output (you figure it out....), they determined that I build mostly oxylate stones. That being said we talked about options and what causes the stones. Foods high in oxylates like: dark green leafy veggies, peanutes, citrus fruits and strawberries are to be avoided. He also said that HIGH levels of protein ingestion could be problematic. His suggestion for me was to take in less than 50 gm of protein a day, but because of my WLS (and argument from me), I will not do less than 70gm a day including my protein supplement. The other thing about kidney stones is water consumption, especially if you're doing a lot of protein shakes. I'm now being told to drink a minimum of 130 oz of water a day (I was doing 100 oz a day). Talk about feeling like you're gonna float away. Now... on to treatment.... Here's where it gets ugly and I'm going to have a hard time being complient..... In addition to my calcium citrate (1500 mg/day), I'm now supposed to be taking 2 500 mg tums per day because the calcium carbonate (which I won't absorb so well) is known to bind with the oxylates, thereby carrying the bad stuff out of the body. I also need to start taking an old medicine that used to be used for lowering cholesterol (mine is 115 and doesn't really need to go lower), but has the side effect of also lowering oxylate levels. Biggest issue with this med is that it comes in a powdered not pill form and is supposed to get mixed with either food or juice (OJ is recomended but I'm supposed to avoid that ). I'm not a good powder person... I won't even do powdered protein supplements or drinks... I hate the grit texture. I'm supposed to take this stuff twice a day... Yuck!!!!! Anyway, I'm supposed to follow this protocol for the next 60 days and then repeat the tests I had before..... We'll see if it actually changes anything. I'm not very hopeful.... That's my story. I'm sticking to it.... Jan
