Guest guest
Hi Pam: So you were one of the visitors by ship in Progreso. We used to sit on the terrace with our tea in the early a.m. (in our pj's) watching the cruise ships come across the horizon. We went very often to Progreso for shopping (now they have a big supermarket--much easier than trekking from little shop to little shop in the old days) and got to know all the shopkeepers. We actually lived in Chicxulub Puerto, a tiny town to the east, about three miles away, with very frequent rickety bus service bqck and forth to Progreso. Sometimes the bus driver would see us or someone else coming down the lane and he would back up and wait for us to get on the bus. Merida is a very lovely colonial city with strong French influences---about 45 minutes by bus from Progreso--many lovely buildings, much activity on Sunday with closed streets, vendors in the parks, and the nice people all dressed in their best--especially the children and babies. We went to Uxmal, a better site than Chichen Itza, we think, often and with all our guests--about 2 hours away, and Yaxcapoil, an old henequen haciendas. Now there are also many refurbished haciendas with restaurants and hotels. Also there are many minor archeological sites being excavated all the time, and good museums in Merida. Mostly we hung out, and had coffee in tiny cups at a cafe in Progreso and watched the passersby. We also shopped for vegetables in Chicxulub at the market, and I attempted to speak Mayan--got lots of laughs about that. And the French bread--wow--bring that home hot and devour it--had to buy 2 loaves, one to eat on the short walk home. We drank bottled water, I disinfected all fruits and vegetables by soaking them for 20 minutes in a special solution, and we did not get sick. The beaches are not as beautiful by any means as they are in Cancun, from what I hear, and they have eroded badly over the years. The beach areas are very humid and windy at times, and storms come up quickly. But now I am getting homesick for the place. Yes, go back to the area sometime. There are lots of pluses, but also minuses, of course. Lou Reynolds 11:32 AM 4/5/2002 -0500, you wrote: >Hi lou, > >Dave & I visited Merida last month when we were on our >cruise.
