Hi Janice,

I just found this new information... there are 5 new Parkinsons Care Centers

in Florida, including one in ville. Call them and ask how they can

help you. Tell them you were diagnosed with Multiple System Atrophy - a

Parkinson Plus disorder.

With a grant from the state, the National Parkinson Foundation has

established National Parkinson Foundation Care Center of Florida, Inc.

(NPFCC), to open five specialized Parkinson's Centers in Tallahassee,

ville, Orlando, Palm Beach and Fort Lauderdale. The five centers,

which opened in February, provide diagnostic services, specialized treatment

and counseling that will have a positive effect on the quality of life of

persons with Parkinson's disease.

Present at each Center will be a full time nurse-patient coordinator to

educate Parkinson's patients, caregivers, family members and the community;

counsel patients and caregivers on how to better cope with Parkinson's

disease; implement special programs; and coordinate with Parkinson's support

groups. A neurologist with specialized training in Parkinson's disease will

be available at each Center 32 hours per month to provide diagnostic

services and medical care. In addition, each Center will feature a resource

library containing educational brochures, books, videos, and magazines about

care and treatment of persons with Parkinson's disease. Respite care to

assist Parkinson's caregivers will be available at the Palm Beach Center.

Creation of the five Parkinson's Centers will reduce the need for emergency

room visits due to over-medication as well as state-assisted nursing home

and long4erm care for patients, in turn reducing the economic burden on the

state of Florida for Medicaid-funded care. Recognizing this, NPF submitted a

grant to the Florida Legislature to establish the additional patient

centers. The grant was sponsored by Representatives Villalobos and

Elaine Bloom. Respective Appropriation Chairs, Senator Doc Meyers and

Representative Debby on, approved the funding.

NPFCC is a program for the treatment, education, and cure of Florida's

growing Parkinson's disease patient population. Future projections include

possible expansion of this program to other states.
