My last HbA1c was 6.1 and the one before that was 5.6 [DAF] Is this the same as Glycohemoglobin (HGB A1C)? Mine started at 6.1 pre-op, but is 5.0 now 2.5 years out. I have a terrible time with carbs and was gestational diabetic. I've been running from it most of my adult life. Is this test for diabetes. I thought they just watch blood sugars, but have to admit that I don't know what about have the things they test are for.

Yes, the A1C is a measurement of how your blood sugars have been running over a period of time like 2-3 months. It give the Doctor a means to see if you are telling the truth when you tell him what your daily readings are from your log book or meter, or to see in general how your sugars have been. If you are not a confirmed diabetic, the A1C could be used to indicate to the doctor that your sugars are out of normal ranges and are a diabetic, but a simple in house blood test can confirm the current sugar in your blood. If you are new to diabetes a wonderful web site by a wonderful person who has dedicated his heart and soul to diabetes is http://www.mendosa.com/diabetes.htm just click on that address.
