Guest guest
Hi all, I am 18 months post op. I have posted here many times before and did the introduction a while back but lately my posts haven't been making it to the board. I don't know what's up with that, but hope this one makes it through. I have been having a problem with gas, cramping and loose stools off and on but lately it has been bad. I know this is a side effect from the DS but it has gotten worse over the last month and I can't help but think if I change the way I eat it will improve. I take Flagyl for the gas, which helps immensely when I remember to take it regularly. My question is this... Anyone longer term DSer's out there who eat whole foods? Like bread made from live sprouts instead of flour (ezekial bread), nuts, chicken, cheese, brown rice instead of white, beans etc? I am thinking that maybe if I improve the quality of the food I am eating my body will respond favorably and I will feel better? I eat a lot of protien, but usually it is poor quality- and I eat a lot of carbs/starches, fast food, junk food etc. I don't drink protein drinks and although I know most of the people on the boards here firmly beleive in it I don't plan to start. I hated it as an early preop, and I hate it now. As long as my protein shows good on my labs I am going to avoid those shakes. I plan to continue eating my meats- the meats I plan to concentrate on are Tuna, salmon, snapper, chicken, beef, sliced turkey breast, eggs, bacon & ham. My main meats seem to be chicken, eggs, turkey & tuna. (easy, portable and fast) The cheeses I eat are shredded cheddar, shredded mozerella & american cheese (I know highly processed not whole at all but I love it). I have switched to the 7 grain Ezekial Bread, I have changed my snacks from regular crackers to granola bars (is this really an improvement?), pecans, peanuts & low fat peanut butter. I have purchased and tried the Go Lean Crunch which tastes fantastic but doesn't seem to sit to well with my tummy (I get naseated), I am going to try again though. I love yogurt, but when taking the flagyl it causes nasea. ( I will try it again, but am pretty certain I can't do it. The fresh vegetables I easily tolerate are salads (tomato, lettuce, cucumber), carrots, broccoli - unfortunately unless it's in a soup or stew thats it. LOL. Veges are yucky! I need ideas- what are some other whole foods/food changes I can make? (other than protein shakes!) I want to eat healthier, not to lose weight, but to FEEL BETTER. Thanks in advance for your input. Sincerely, Latour 324/166 -158# DS 3/22/01 5'8 " 30 years old http://www.picturetrail.com/gallery/view?username=llatour
