Guest guest
Dawn, I am slowly catching up on older posts and came across one from you ... > My newest sleep problem has been about being able to get to sleep. I seem to > have Restless Leg Syndrome. ... I've been doing a lot of > reading on nutrients lately. I find that missing nutrients in our system can > cause the symtoms of RLS. I believe I saw another post about a relationship between iron and RLS. Have you found other nutrients that are related? What nutrients were low on your blood tests? I ask because I have had this since I was a kid. My husband has been recently diagnosed with it at 44 years old. Any information you can pass on or pointers to articles would be greatly appreciated. I am on a medication, Mirapex, and that is what my husband was recently given as well. Is that what worked for you? -- Gigi

At first, it seemed to work but all it really did was put me to sleep. Once I got used to it, I would be extremely tired and couldn't sleep with my legs bothering me. Now I take a medicine called Madopar. It is used in Parkinson's disease to increase the levels of dopamine in the brain. RLS is sometimes associated with other conditions, and dealing with them can sometimes cure the restlessness. Examples include iron, folic acid or vitamin B12 deficiency. This is from http://www.netdoctor.co.uk/q_a/q_a-svar.asp?mode=viewans&artid=1396&subid=7 . I know I have been low in iron and suspect B-12 as well. There is also a mention of magnesium deficiency in the link below could cause symptoms. I do know I also have had RLS all my life. My mother has it and a suspect my son has it. It is known to be hereditary. I will say though, lack of iron may have made mine worse. It got to the point where I could not sleep at all until of course, I was totally exhausted. Here are some sites that may help... http://www.rls.org/frames/home_frame.htm , The entire article is interesting but please be sure to read, Iron Metabolism and RLS. http://www.sleepdisorderchannel.net/rls/causes.shtml http://www.gnc.com/health_notes/Concern/Restless_Legs_Syndrome.htm http://www.neuro.jhmi.edu/rls/causes.html Hope these help a little.
