Guest guest
Vera, Thank you for asking. Sheldon was in the hospital for two weeks. He was released after 10 days to recover at home. He was home for a day and I had to call 911 because he blacked out and I couldn't wake him up, so he ended up right back in the hospital. I brought him home late Wednesday, but he is very weak, is still not eating well (although he is keeping what he eats down), and he is still very yellow. The doctor wanted him to see a blood disorder specialist before we left the hospital because his blood platelet count is going down. The blood specialist had already left for the day so Sheldon talked them into going home. We are going to the blood specialist today and then back to the kidney specialist this afternoon. They have taken all medications away from Sheldon until his liver gets a chance to heal. Finally two days ago the liver count starting going down, which we are very thankful for. They did a liver biopsy checking for 's disease. If all of the tests in the biopsy come back negative, they are assuming that the liver damage is from the medications he is taking for MSA Shy-Drager. I did go to the Support Meeting in Thousand Oaks. It was very worthwhile, although I was the only person from a MSA family. The speaker was excellent. She was a neurological opthamologist from UCLA and the Veteran's Hospitals. She spoke about how the neurological diseases effect the eyes. In MSA when the eyes have trouble focusing she suggested using a ruler so the eyes know where to go back to on the page. She also assured everyone who was concerned that they would go blind, that this does not lead to blindness. On May 25th and there will be a neurological doctor from a movement disorder clinic as a speaker. I would suggest that anyone in the Los Angeles area who can make it try to go. The meeting is casual with very nice people. Although the neurological diseases have a different name, they are all similar and all of us are all dealing with the same concerns. Take care of yourselves and your loved ones. God Bless. Verlene Just wondering ? > I was just wondering: > > 1. Elaine how is Bob doing? and how are you? > 2. Guest guest
Verlene, Just a warning on $$$. If Sheldon has an infection and leaves the hospital, then they find out and have to him him IV antibiotics, they may have to put him into a nursing home (rehab) for a period. If he goes directly to a nursing home from the hospital, Medicare pays for a great deal of the cost for the first 20-30 days (which is often enough time). BUT it he goes from home or the doctor's office to a nursing home, you have to pay it all. Make sure you know where you stand on treatment, it can cost you. Sheldon needs to realize this sort of thing can cost you big bucks and let the doctors do their thing. I know getting home always sounds good, but until Medicare changes their rules to allow better home care, watch out.
