Guest guest
When taking antibiotics also eat yogurt it helps keep healthy bacteria working in the digestive system and prevents diarrhea. Also Achidophilos helps. Can get them in the health food store in chewable tablets. Good idea to have a swallowing test done while she is in the hospital incase her pneumonia is from aspiration. Prayers to all, Judy pistachio53 wrote: > Hi all, I just want to thank you again, for teaching me to be > vigilant about watching my sister for infections. Guest guest
, I'm so sorry to hear that your sister has pneumonia. I'm pleased, however, that you caught it early and that she's getting the treatment she needs. I'm afraid that her pneumonia may be caused by aspiration. As the muscles of the mouth and throat weaken, swallowing becomes more difficult and small amounts of food or liquids may be drawn into the lungs. This may happen without any sign of choking -- silent aspiration, it is called. I think it might be wise for your sister to have a swallowing test, which is done by having her swallow radio- opaque substances in while standing in front of a floroscope. The process is videotaped and analyzed to see if anything is going into the lungs. There is usually a speech and language pathologist present at the time of the test. As far as the antibiotics are concerned, they can destroy the natural flora of the intestine, and sometimes cause a yeast infection in the mouth and throat. It's probably wise to speak to her doctor about what to do to prevent those unpleaset side effects. Guest guest
, Is your sister having speech problems? She may not be drinking enough due to swallowing difficulties OR she may be aspirating. A swallowing test (video x-ray with a speech pathologist watching) would not hurt. Antibiotics are a necessary evil for MSA patients. Just make sure she takes all of the ones she is supposed to take and follows the doctor's directions completely.
