Do you think you could truly reach the girl by offering to give her a makeover? I would be happy to chip in for some products, etc. if you think that would be an effective approach. Guest guest
Hi gang, I am so sad and so mad all at once. I am a hairdresser (I don't work in the field, but am still liscensed). I went to the home of a friend, whom I haven't seen in many years this morning. She called me yesterday and asked me to come by and fix her hair. She has been very sick for quite some time. As it turns out, she had gastric bypass last year and hit bottom 6 weeks ago. She almost died, because her protein dropped to almost ZERO!! She looks terrible. She only weighs 129 lbs, but her hair is coming out by wads, she can't get up and down by herself. She uses a walker to get around and had to be on TPN IV drip for 4 weeks! This woman is 40 but looks 80!! She leaned on the counter as she walked through the kitchen and began to bleed because her skin is so fragile, AND SHE STILL DOESN " T TAKE HER VITS OR DRINK SHAKES! She says that the pills hurt her stomach going down! I took my protein powder and my blender and made her up a shake. She took 2 sips, said, " That's good " but never touched another drop! I was there for almost 4 hours this morning and she never ate a thing. She can't even take oral medicine for pain because her stomach is so full of ulcers. She has to use a patch which isn't even touching the pain. Her feet are swollen and her legs are weeping fluid because she is shutting down big time! She even has boils on the bottoms of her feet! My goodness, what will it take to wake some people up? Now, her 14 year old daughter has just had the surgery in JULY!!! A wacko local surgeon, who is out for EVERYONE " S money did this surgery on this kid. While I was in this home, there was a bag of tootsie roll suckers on the couch, a box of fiddle faddle on the end table, crackers and chips on the counter in the kitchen, frozen pizza's in the freezer (I had to put the lite whipped cream that I brought in there)and cokes in the fridge. I also saw cans of BOOST and ensure on the dining room table. That's what her surgeon told her to drink if she couldn't eat!! But, she's not even doing that. I know that if the mother is in this shape, the daughter probably is not heading in the right direction either. (She was gone to school this morning). I am mad!!! MAD at surgeon's who could do someone like this and not insist that they take care of themselves!! Mad at surgeon's who are out for money and would do a surgery of this type on a 14 year old after seeing the shape that her mom is in!!! Who is going to teach this child the right way to eat?? Her mother is almost dead!!! I want to go to this woman's house and force feed her the shakes! How on earth and I suppose to drive by her house each day knowing that there is something that could turn her around, but her " surgeon doesn't think she needs those shakes. " He told her to eat 129 grams in protein per day. HOW IN THE WORLD CAN SHE DO THAT IF SHE CAN " T STAND A VITAMIN ON HER STOMACH?? KAREN B. I shared with her a portion of your story, (what little I know) and how well you seem to have recovered by doing the shakes. Anything else that you can share..that may help me to reach her..would be greatly appreciated. Any of you other GB people who have had to go on TPN..Email me..I am very frustrated by this situation! I want to help her, but don't know what to do! Please excuse me..I just had to vent. I have heard of people having to go on TPN because of crashing..but this is the first time I have seen it with my eyes..and I am ANGRY! There is no reason for her to be like this. But because her surgeon has taken a " nonchalant " approach, so has she. And now I fear for her 14 year old too! Thanks for letting me vent, much love, Shelby

Anything else that you can share..that may help me to reach her..would be greatly appreciated Oh my God! I have tears in my eyes sitting here reading this! Where does she live? You have to find someone, a nutritionist ANYONE who will help her! She needs to drink the shakes, one shot glass at a time. She needs a doc quickly. Call the AMA or something, or home health care to get someone to come and help her. Call the anorexia foundation, possibly they could help or refer her to a doctor who could build her back up...before it's too late!!! We will keep her in our prayers. I am starting to get more involved with our local support group here in Sacramento area, and many of the posties don't really realize the importance of protein... they are still on the " free-ride " mentality as most of the docs around (two in particular) don't have any patients who are further than about 3-4 years out. They do recommend protein, about 60 g a day, but don't insist upon it. Where does your friend live??? B Folsom, CA

Guest guest
Shelby, I am no expert but your friend needs serious help soon. It seems to me that she needs to be hospitalized before her vital organs fail her. Other than medical help, it seems she may need psychiatric help as well. I considered myself committing slow suicide while I was overweight. That was part of my reason for having WLS. Honestly, I think a majority of people that are over weight are depressed. Possibly your friend is depressed and now going in the other direction. I don't know what is available where you live, but please make some calls. As for her 14 year old daughter...what are the laws now on doing WLS on a minor. When I had mine in '93', there was a 16 yr. old getting this done. They had to go through a court to get it done since she was a minor. Please keep us updated. Dawn --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free. Checked by AVG anti-virus system (http://www.grisoft.com). Guest guest
I really think this woman needs immediate medical help from her PCP since obviously her surgeon is a useless (swear word) and she sounds like she's in deep trouble health-wise. And I think she should be encouraged to file a complaint with her State's Medical Examiners Board because her surgeon is just plain irresponsible. Not only has he let this woman crash and burn nutritionally, but I think operating on a 14 year old is outrageous. I believe it also goes against the NIH's guidelines (never mind common sense). Guest guest
I have made up my mind that I am going over there everyday. I drive right by her house on the way to my kids school in the mornings and afternoons. I am going to insist that she get these shakes down. I will keep you all posted. I know that she has visiting nurses who come in 4 times per week. I'm not sure what kind of care they are giving her or if they are monitoring her intake, but I saw today, that she's not eating anything. I haven't seen this woman in quite some time. (several years) and we were not especially close then. (I was her hairdresser). But, I do not think that it was a coincidence that she called me yesterday. I take this as a divine appointment. Thanks for all of your suggestions..I am definantly going to stay on top of this one. I discussed with her today, the need to find another surgeon. She agreed that he was not doing the job. When her daughter went in for a follow up last time, He asked if she was doing okay, she said yes..and he said, " okay, see you next time. " I think that if I keep in contact with her and get to know her better, she'll allow me to give her more guidance. I definantly am not going to back off on the protein thing. If I have to make a different recipe everyday, 12 times a day..I'm going to find something that she can tolerate!! Much love, Shelby
