Guest guest
Hi all. I've been donating blood for over a year now and everytime I go my hemoglobin is always in the 14 range. Around January I stopped because I was scheduled for my tt in February and wanted to keep what I had. Subsequently rescehduled the tt for April, but anyway, labs done in January showed Hemoglobin 14, March labs showed 12.5, May labs showed 12. When I went to donate blood the other day, my hemoglobin was 10.6. They won't take a donation unless you're at 12.5. Went to my gastro doc who I work for and told him what they said and he drew a CBC right then. Came back at 11.3. Told me not to worry and that everything was fine. Going to have copies sent to my internist, but want to know should I be concerned about the drop in six months from 14 to 11.3? Seems to me that something is not right. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks. Regina Block
Guest guest
Hi Regina, In one answer Yes... I have been anemic over the course of my 23 years since my open RNY.. It takes all my effort just to get my hemoglobin count near 12.0... Without taking my protein shakes daily and my iron supplement daily...my count would just keep dropping. In fact up until a couple of weeks ago, I haven't been on any protein supplement since Septmeber, 1999 when my abdominal fistula appeared from my January, 1999 Colon resection for cancer...since that time, I have been having a bear of a time trying to figure out what I can eat and can't eat to keep the acid from digesting the surface of my abdomin. During this time, I still kept taking my perscriptioned Chromagen Forte (Iron supplement) twice daily and most of the iron was just passed through my system, and my hemoglobin count has been around 9.0.. Since, getting back on the protein shake (that I can mix with bottle spring water..only 4oz dosage at time because of the size of my stomach pouch) I have started to build my red cell count back up. I can feel it, my stamina is starting to return and I am beginning to feel more like my old self. Also, the iron supplement that I have been and am continuing to take is being absorbed due to the use of the protein supplement. Consider this little experience and think about it.... Hope it helps, ///Bob Blood work > Hi all. I've been donating blood for over a year now and everytime I go > my hemoglobin is always in the 14 range. Guest guest
Shirley, I have 17 mo old twins and we are pretty sure one of the boys has RSS. The geneticist hasn't given us a 100% diagnosis and may not ever... Jack had perfect bloodwork. His bone age was delayed though. He's much smaller than his twin Joe. Jack probably only weighs about 16 pounds right now and about 29 " tall. I'd guess Joe to be a good 8-10 pounds heavier and about 3-4 " taller. (They haven't been to the doctor in over a month so I don't know exact measurements right now.) Jack doesn't have very many of the classic signs of RSS but does have the " look " in my opinion. One of these days I'll get around to posting a picture. Have you looked at the pictures yet? Doing that helped me tremendously when I first joined this support group. What kind of a doctor are you working with - endo or geneticist? Lindsey Mom to Jack (RSS?/SGA) and Joe, 17 mo old and Ben, due early August
