Guest guest
Hi everyone, Though I don't post much, I read (almost) everything and have learned amazing things from you all! I posted a few months ago about not taking Advil - I had a gastric bleed due to NSAID use and was in the hospital over Xmas and New Years. My hemoglobin upon admission was 6.6. I had 10 units of blood during my stay before the bleeding quit. I also found out I was pregnant. Sadly, I had a miscarriage in February, then my HGB went down to 7.5. One more transfusion! I take iron (liquid Niferex) religiously but my HGB stayed at 10.5 for months. My iron stores had been low (ferritin of 3) for over a year, and thanks to this list, I asked my PCP about IV iron treatments. She said she wasn't familiar with them, so I gave her info about Dextran and after checking my iron stats one more time, she referred me to a hematologist. He said that even though my HGB was below normal, he wouldn't usually do the IV treatments. BUT with my gastric bleed history, and my stores of iron almost non-existent, he would treat me - if I had another bleed, it could be dangerous. (I'm planning to have my TT done in Sept/Oct) and he said I should definitely wait until after the treatments to have the surgery!) I've had four treatments, 2 weeks apart so far. I have 3 more, then the hematologist will recheck my iron stores. BUT!!!! They check my HGB every time I go for a treatment and mine is now 12.6!!!!!! I have not had a normal reading since before my GB 2-1/2 years ago. And I cannot tell you how much better / normal I feel. So THANK YOU, everyone. You really make a difference in my life. gina bean minnesota RNY 1/6/
