This is one of the things I am learning to deal with as I evaluate my new body. When I don't eat much, I'm hungry (I'm a DS, my stomach is quite a bit larger than an RNY pouch). Gut rumbling, if small children get in my way I'll eat them, kind of hungry. I have to ignore it; I have to have a protein shake, or a cup of tea, or a bottle of water. If I ate every time I felt hungry, I'd be eating all the time. I still can't reliably tell the difference between real hunger and head hunger - so I live and die by the calorie count.
