Guest guest
Before surgery I had been taking Celebrex or Vioxx and Dr. told me to take Vioxx. I believe it easier on the stomach (can't remember the reason right now). Guest guest
I am pre op-- but I have been on Vioxx for over a year-- even taking up to two tabs a day-- no stomach problems at all! almost everything else I have tried upset my stomach. My doc also has me on Prilosec which he says will also help protect the stomach from any irritation-- have no idea if I will continue on Prilosec post op, but I hope I do stay on the vioxx-- arthritic knees hurt!-- Nan --- ziff_@... wrote: > > Before surgery I had been taking Celebrex or Vioxx and > Dr. told me > to take Vioxx. Celebrex predisposes your stomach to ulcers and is not recommended for those w/a history of bleeding ulcers, GI bleeds, Stomach surgery, etc. Hugs, Liane

But, recent articles indicate that both of them (the cox2 inhibitors) may give short-term relief, but may also cause more long-term damage to cartilage. --Steve

I do believe a handful of people have actually died from such complications. Of course, the rate of experiencing such a severe aftereffect is extremely RARE. I was prescribed CElebrex for a spastic colon right before surgery. I did a bunch of online research and that's where I got the info about the gastric bleeding and deaths, etc. I was concerned, but Dr. Gagner said that since I rarely used it (I wasn't even taking it daily, but on an 'as need basis' and I was too scared to even take it then! ROFL) it wouldn't be a problem. I think that Mt. Sinai makes pre-ops go off it before surgery though and don't prescribe it as post-ops due to this reason as well as the other ones (ulcers, etc.). all the best,

Guest guest
Celebrex caused a GI bleed after two doses (yes - just two tiny doses!) So, I'm scared to try the Vioxx. Guest guest
My Chiropractor (and I verified this with my WLS surgeon) explained to me that Vioxx although a antisteroidal drug is built on a different part of the normal make up of them and won't hurt our pouches. NOW don't ask me to quote the exact way he explained as I've slept too many times since then and do not recall his exact terminology.. maybe the doc out there can explain this better. BUT my surgeon agreed and wrote me a script in case I needed it again. Hope this helps.
