Guest guest
Hi. Just my two cents. There has been many many posting about vitamins and minerals. Pro's and con's. And this is a debate that this site has seen many times. in your case you are perfectly right. B12 is not a supplement that should be taken without doctors approval when you are on methotrexate. B12 is naturally absorbed in your stomach's intestinal track, If you have a deficiency in B12 it is do to a factor called and intrinsic factors that is produced in your stomach's lining. Without this, B-12 will not be bound and you can not absorb this vitamin. Regardless of how much you take. If you have a B-12 absorption problem you need to be under the care of an endocrinologist, esp with RP. Glenda, you also are right, Calcium is needed. However calcium is a mineral and not a vitamin. Not knowing the medications that you are taking or your circumstances, this may be just what you should be doing. I know from all the recent reports coming out through the medical journals that calcium, though once thought, from a vitamin supplement is not the best way to digest the calcium needed to prevent osteoporosis. And that again this is a problem in your metabolism for which you should be under the care of an endocrinologist. In both cases, you need to discuss this with your personal doctors. Vitamins and minerals are vital for the function of proper health and well being. However random doses can be dangerous. Adding one without adding others in the correct balance can really through your body out of balance. Calcium does not absorb into your system without the right balance of magnesium and zinc. B complex vitamins have there own balancing act. Most regular doctors do not understand how vitamins and minerals and trace elements work in our bodies. It comes down to this. A healthy, well balanced diet is your best bet. If you feel you need vitamins and minerals, speak to your doctors. Have them run the correct test to see if you even need these or if you are just taking them for not, or if you truly need them. Some of the medications we take for RP adversely with our medications. Some even hold them in our livers and kidneys longer then the should be help. Upping the toxic levels in our systems. This is only my two cents worth. Love R.
