On Valentine's Day, Tom, our son Ben, and I visited with a Dr. Alterman at

Beth Israel/ Singer Division in NYC concerning deep brain stimulation. He

has done at least 150 such operations on Parkinson's patients, and he has

performed it on two MSA patients. Tom's response to sinemet did not make it

worthwhile. He explained that when your beneficial affects wear off

quickly - say in 30 minutes, and when sinemet is dramatic in reducing tremor

or other symptoms when it is first taken, these are the type patients they

can help. Tom's sinemet lasted 3 1/2 hours and his main symptom was

restless legs. We also met with the neurologist that worked with Dr.

Alterman, a Dr. Michele Tagliati, who was very personable. That clinic's
