FREE BROCHURE ON LUPUS The Lupus Foundation of America is offering free brochures on the debilitating disease, along with a quiz to spot the illness and information about clinical trials. Lupus affects some 1.4 million Americans, mostly women between the ages of 15 and 44. The disease causes the immune system to attack the body's own tissues. The average lupus patient waits three to five years before being properly diagnosed, because the symptoms of the disease are similar to less serious illnesses. Warning signs for the illness include aches, joint pain and swelling that lasts longer than three months, unexplained fevers over 100 degrees Fahrenheit lasting more than a few days, and skin rashes in the shape of a butterfly across the nose and cheeks. Other symptoms include persistent, extreme exhaustion and weakness even after restful sleep, and pain in the chest when breathing deeply. Researchers are conducting clinical trials on treatment for lupus kidney disease, a leading cause of sickness and death in lupus patients. People interested in learning more about this trial should call .
