incisonal hernia update

So my surgeon would like me to be more healed post surgery and then he will go

in and take care of the hernia. It's quite small on the right side but it's an

issue. It can turn into a problem down the road if it doesn't go back inside at

a certain point.. I really don't need to risk intestinal strangulation. As of

now there are only a couple of positions that the hernia is uncomfortable in and

granted I have been lifting a little too much especially before the ER incident

this past weekend as my husband was gone for the week- who knew he lifts so many

things for me. I did buy too many things at the market too schlepping it home.

Maybe this also contributed to my meltdown?

Anyway, unless I have an episode like I did last weekend which I won't damnit!

-The docs are treating it as a fluke as it's hard to say it was one of my

Crohn's reactions as all of the strictures were removed- you see the stupid doc

told my husband that the hernia was causing an obstruction freaking my husband

out totally getting my mom prepared to get on a plane.. the doc didn't even talk

to the radiologist and surgeon before he relayed this opinion- like how

universally stupid is that?

Anyway, my mom suggested that I wear like a supportive belt to keep on my

abdomen.

Do you guys know of such a product?

Thanks!

Jodi--you can find hernia belts at medical supply places or online. Depending on where your incision is, though, the compressive part of the belt may not hit that spot--so just be aware of that if you buy online and can’t try it on. Sometimes Walmart or Walgreens may have them in their section with the ace bandages and other support Ace things.

Terry,

There is a medical supply shop a couple of blocks from my house. Didn't think

they'd sell it there. I wonder if it will be itchy to wear during this humid

summer? Been very humid in NYC although I must say summer has been super mild

but major rain. This past week besides a couple of days I have used my AC.

Jodi,

Very convenient to have med supply so close--maybe a good idea to call first before you walk there in the humidity. We also have had ridiculous rain. I have also had the AC on this week due to humidity.

I don't know if it will be itchy, but it will give you the support you need so you don't do more damage while performing household tasks. They do have a lot of different styles so maybe you'll find a real comfortable one. I'm sure they can help you at the med supply as they do this for a living.

My girlfriends who have had hernia's and heavy pregnancies both swear by spanx

underwear. It's designed for women and comes in a variety of super support

shapes. They also carry a great maternity belly support belt in most of the

maternity shops vs. the medical supply stores.

I wore something like that after my hysterectomy, it's a product intended for new moms after a c-section, but it worked great. It's very lightweight and uses velcro to close so you don't have to squeze into anything. You just lie down on it and wrap it around your tummy very tightly. It helped keep things in place when I was walking around. Like you I live in town and don't drive and schlep my groceries around town. I felt much better when wearing it.

Here's a picture of what kind I used, you can order it online but take your measurements because they do come in different sizes.
