Guest guest
Dear , My brother-in-law sent me your message (I just signed up for this listserve as a result) and I'll share my approach with you. I, too, am a FNP and I, too, am in doctoral study in order to do research with migrant farmworkers. This summer I did a pilot study to help make my dissertation smoother (I hope). I intentionally designed a study which did not require any kind of individual follow-up in order to preserve confidentiality. The IRB at my school (Binghamton University, a SUNY) permits verbal consent without a paper trail (signatures, etc.) for certain types of research as long as participants know they are participating in research and they can " drop out " at any time, no info will be shared, etc. My Spanish is also shaky: farmworkers can usually understand me, but I have trouble understanding their answers. My solution was to have a fluent outreach worker do my interviews (this part will get trickier for my dissertation since I'll need lots of interviews and the migrants are only in PA for 4-6 weeks). My assistant was accepted and trusted by the workers; many of them recognized me from our clinic nights, too. You may need to specifically ask about immigration status (I didn't); in that case I think it is imperative that you take no identifying information from the participants, and realize that your replies may not reflect the whole truth. A trusted outreach worker might help in that regard. Good luck, and stay in touch. --Louise Ward
