Thanks Pat, I'm going to see if my local pharmacy will order

it for me. It looks perfect.

Hi Rhonda,

Keep the faith! It took my son's fistulas over a year to heal on

SCD. In the meantime try using Calmoseptine ointment around the

fistula opening. It is soothing and prevents irritation.

See:

Take care, Pat

Hi Rhonda,

I'm really sorry! Try not to get too discouraged. had a fistula when we started the diet and it took 6-8 months to heal. His was to his bladder...sounds like 's is anal. I'm sure it has nothing to do with the diet. I'd bet that it has been in the works for a while now. I don't think those things just pop up over night. I know 's didn't. They take quite a while to heal but but just stick with the diet and it'll happen.

Best wishes,

Today told me he thought he had a second fistula and asked me to look at it. I checked and not only is the first fistula bigger, but there is a second large fistula near it. We've been on the diet just under 2 months and I thought things were going so well. His GI doc is on vacation until mid September and we'll see him then about it. I've started him back on soaking in Epsom salts 3x day, told him to keep it clean. I'm just crushed. Is there some part of the diet that triggered this? I can't imagine how. Does anyone have any experience like this? He's been so good with the diet and so positive about it. Rhonda UCSon, 16, CD

Don't beat yourself up. We ALL make mistakes! When we started, I somehow missed the part about, don't go from the intro to eating whatever you want, with the exception of things that it specifically says in the book shouldn't be tried for 3 months/6 months or whatever. So I put on the intro and after that, started feeding him whatever he wanted that was legal! It didn't go too well. We'd been on the diet for a long time before I realized that a lot of the meat in the grocery store is marinated or injected...says "enhanced with up to xx% broth solution". I figured it out one night because it seemed like always got sick after eating pork. I dug the package out of the trash and sure enough. I was so blown away that raw meat had stuff added to it. I would've never guessed that in a million

years. Pork, chicken and turkey are the worst about having broth added.I know it's so frustrating and it's really hard when you're taking care of someone else. If it were me and I made myself sick on accident, that's one thing but making sick makes me feel incredibly guilty so I know where you're coming from. I'd bet money that 2 months of yogurt with bifidus in it didn't cause a fistula though. And even with the mistake, he has had improvement, right? So the past 2 months haven't been a waste at all. Really, try not to get down on yourself. You're doing a really awesome thing for you and your son. I know a lot of people that wouldn't go to the lengths that we do to take care of our loved ones. This diet is time consuming and can be a pain in the butt at times. It's much easier to sit back and hope that eventually some combination of pills will make life at least bearable. It takes work to achieve better than that. I didn't want to

just survive. His quality of life before this diet was horrible. I wanted him BETTER and HEALTHY, not just able to function....on a good day. Take care,Kim H.husband, , CD 1999, SCD 2002To: BTVC-SCD Sent: Thursday, August 6, 2009 5:37:29 PMSubject: Re: Another Fistula, help!

Thanks Kim, but I'm not so sure I didn't cause this. I

was making his yogurt with the Bifid us culture starter. I've

been following the directions in the BTVC and didn't see anywhere that

stated that it was a no no, but there is a thread on pecanbread about

it. It's a newbie mistake and I'm so mad at myself for not being

more thorough. I mean, he has having yogurt smoothies daily.

I cook with it, etc. etc. and I don't know how badly I've screwed

up his diet or if we've done any good at all in the nearly 2 months

feeding him yogurt with this starter. I'm nearly in tears.

All of this work... I'm not stopping the diet, nor am I giving up, I'm

just so angry at myself and I really can not be sure that this mistake

didn't make things worse instead of better.

Rhonda,It's a shame, but don't beat yourself up about it - we all do things likethat when starting out this diet, as there is so much info to ascertain. Mara I'm nearly in tears. All of this work... Hey PJ,

I'm going to freecycle mine. Hopefully someone can use it.

Rhonda 45, UC

Son, 16, CD

SCD almost 2 months

I made the same mistake at

first- bought the wrong starter. I still have a bunch of it- it's not

returnable. Wish I knew what to do with it instead of throwing it

out.

It's a learning curve really-
