Hi Mo,Welcome :-)Some people have a difficult time tolerating the yogurt. I'd introduce it slowly, like 1/4 or 1/2 tsp a day and gradually increase it from there.Yes, there is a recipe for cooked mayo at, http://www.pecanbread.com/new/recipes/cookedmayonnaise.htmlI leave out the honey. I just prefer it that way and I salt to taste and I use vinegar if I don't have lemons on hand. This yogurt maker is $34.00, http://www.amazon.com/YoLife-YL-210-Tribest-Yolife-Yogurt/dp/B001D09LLU/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8 & s=hpc & qid=1249702434 & sr=8-1 and it looks pretty cool. You can either make yogurt with the small cups that it comes with or with your own containers. Someone here has this one and said she can fit 3 quart size mason jars in it at a time. I'd like to have one but can't really justify buying it when I already have a yogurt maker that works. Wish the darn thing would break ;-)You could check Craigslist and garage sales for a used one. Hi, I'm hoping to start the diet in September and had some questions. In Elaine's book, she recommends eating the dry cottage cheese mixed with yogurt on day 1. I read on the pecanbread website that they recommend not introducing the yogurt (probiotics) until at least day 5. Does anyone have any suggestions on this? I have crohns disease.

Also, I want to make homemade mayo but the recipe has a raw egg in it. Since egg beaters are illegal I'm concerned about eating something that has raw eggs in it. Does anyone have a recipe where the egg is cooked?

I don't have a yogurt maker and I'm not crazy about investing in one since I don't know if the diet will work for me. Any suggestions on an inexpensive brand or even a used one?

Thanks, Mo

The parameters for ASD children and people with IBD can be different. You

will notice that the Pecan Bread parameters are basically casein-free to

accommodate the fact that many parents have been conditioned to the idea

that you never, ever, give dairy products to ASD children.

That said, I didn't do any yogurt at first, not because I didn't want it,

but because I started SCD after emergency gall bladder surgery, and

didn't have the physical ability to make any yogurt. I ate beef roast,

pork roast, steamed zucchini and soft-boiled eggs.

Also, I want to make

homemade mayo but the recipe has a raw egg in it. Since egg beaters

are illegal I'm concerned about eating something that has raw eggs in

Yes, I have a cooked mayo recipe. You can also find pasteurized raw eggs,

if you're really paranoid. I've been making mayo and various mayo based

salad dressings for eight years without an issue. Then again, I use eggs

from a local farmer, or organic free-range eggs, and I wash the shell

gently with soap and water before opening it. It's factory farmed eggs

which have given rise to the notion of disease in raw eggs -- that, and

the fact that Big Manufacturing doesn't want us to be able to make

something as easy as mayo for ourselves.

Actually, it's possible to make yogurt with a heating pad, or with a lamp

in a foam cooler. My yogurt maker was the first, and primary purchase I

made for SCD (after buying Breaking the Vicious Cycle) and I

haven't ever regretted it. Since I couldn't find dry curd cottage cheese

the first four years of the diet, and was using well-drained yogurt

instead, I quickly graduated to making yogurt in my Excalibur 9 tray

dehydrator, which lets me make up to 8 liters at a time.

Not for adults with no history of casein allergy. Mara
