Guest guest
Hello everyone! This past week I went on my first trip since starting SCD (also my first trip since I adopted my bird 4 years ago). My mom and I (with said bird in tow) drove from Arizona to Colorado (with an overnight in Utah) to visit family. I got the travel fridge that Marilyn recommended and loaded it up with enough SCD food for a week. Last night we overnighted in New Mexico, and got home this afternoon. Everything went pretty well. I ate the same exact thing nearly everyday, which was okay since it's all food I enjoy. I went out to " eat " with family one night and just ordered an ice tea. They all felt guilty eating in front of me, and it was hard to convince them that I was perfectly okay with it. Sure, their food looked and smelled good, but I really wasn't interested in actually eating it. On another night, I went to a cookout. A little bit less of a problem there, since I could eat a hamburger with cheese (I also had a little mustard, which was questionable as far as SCD goes). People felt slightly less guilty this time, that is until the ice cream cakes rolled out. How do you convince people not to feel bad for you? I don't feel bad for myself, but I guess they don't believe me. Oh, and that was the best hamburger I'd ever eaten (I'm not much of a red meat person). I later found out that they butcher their steers locally, so they were probably completely grass fed. Now I wish I could afford to eat that kind of meat all of the time! I was feeling bad for my mom, because she didn't get any takeout on any of our driving days (she just ate some fruit/nuts/crackers that she brought along). Again, I think she didn't want to eat SAD food in front of me. So last night, I told her that I could probably eat off of Outback Steakhouse's gluten free menu without a problem. I got a steak that just had salt and pepper on it, and ate a couple slices of squash from the seasonal veggies (they were the only ones cooked soft enough for me to eat). Doing an SCD trip was remarkably easy! I just had to eat my food cold, because I didn't have access to a microwave. Also, driving 700 miles (each way) with a birdcage in your lap is not the most comfortable way to travel, but we all survived somehow. Hurray!
