Turns out she DID have surgery the same day as me -- but had a leak/blockage, had to undergo a second surgery and even spent 17 days in a coma! She mentioned that this experimental drug (not yet FDA approved) was used (after contacting her proxy for permission) to help prevent blood clots in her legs going to her heart and killing her while she was in the coma. She mentioned that her skin peeled off (and is still peeling off) in sheets due to that medication. It is possible that Sharon got the same medication to prevent clotting while she was in a coma and/or immobile for an extended period of time? The massive skin peeling was a side effect of this drug. I don't know what the name of it is or anything, but her symptoms sound similar to those that Nellie experienced. I'm so glad to hear Sharon is better and no longer comatose. She has been in our prayers. all the best, laparoscopic BPD/DS with gallbladder removal Dr. Gagner/Dr. Quinn assisting,Mt. Sinai/NYC January 25, 2001 71 days post-op and still feelin' fab! Guest guest
- Thanks for the information about Nellie. I hope she's doing well now. I just got off the phone with Sharon's Mom and she is so happy that Sharon has made a turnaround. Still a long way to go and needs all our thoughts and prayers. But it is sure looking better and Dr. Rabkin was real happy, too. They think the peeling is due to the reaction to the CT scan dye, but also could be due to the heparin, which may be what they used on Nellie too. Sharon is responding, her blood pressure is good, but she is still running a bit of a fever. But, it is exciting that things are looking more hopeful now. I notice you took your loss off -- it goes so fast its hard to keep track of sometimes. =) Glad you're doin' fab! Guest guest
<<< >> Hi, Kris! Thank GOD she is doing fine and even back to work now! I looked for her on the 10th floor after my surgery and since she wasn't listed there, I thought 'oh, she didn't get the surgery yet.' Turns out she was put on the 9th floor! By the time I was discharged she was just about to go into her second surgery. What an ordeal she went through! I'm so glad she made it through and is feeling better. She says she has no problems eating, etc. and has energy. The only thing really still bothering her is the peeling skin - especially on the soles of her feet. <<<<>>> I'm so happy that she's doing better! I'm definately sending a card out pronto. What a great idea to provide her address so everyone can send good wishes! I'm sure that will cheer her up! <<<< >>>> Well, Dr. Gagner does NOT use heparin, actually. He uses the pressure cuffs alone. However, since she was in a coma and bedridden for such a long time, he very well could have administered the heparin after the surgery as a precaution. I know they did give her this other drug to prevent clots and it was more extreme than heparin (the experimental drug) since they were so concerned about her getting clots which could go to her heart/lungs. <<< >>> Oh, she remains in our prayers. She's on my mom's nationwide prayer chain, too! <<<>>> You're right about that! I haven't really kept track of it except where I am now. I am in a period of remarkable pound droppage --- two days ago I was 272. Then, yesterday, I'm 270.5. This morning, I'm officially at 270! ROFL I've lost a total of about 36 lbs since surgery (I started at 307). I can't remember when I was what at any particular time, although I'm jotting it down in my journal. I'm not even clear what day post-op I am sometimes! LOL all the best, laparoscopic BPD/DS with gallbladder removal Dr. Gagner/Dr. Quinn assisting/MT.
