Can someone tell me how to go about getting a companion

at

Mount Sinai Hospital in NYC? How much do they cost and how

long do they stay with you? Also, how much is a private duty

nurse? Any info would be greatly appreciated as surgery is this

Friday!!!!!!!!

Thanks,

Hi a,

First of all, best of luck to you Friday. You're in good hands.

I don't know how the companions work at Sinai but if it is like the

Private Duty Nurses they work on 8 hour shifts. 8a-4p, 4p-midnite, midnite-8a.

I found that the most useful shift to have them, for me, was the 4p - midnite.

The PDN fee is 400 per 8 hour shift. Don't know the companion rate

but have remember hearing 135 per shift.

I used PDN's cause they were covered by my insurance. Call yours and

check it out.

Best Regards,

Rich

Make certain you don't just get a " nurse " , but that you get an RN, that is,

" Registered Nurse " .

Are *private nurses* or companions covered by insurance? If you pay them by

check and get a receipt I wonder if insurance will accept the receipt to

reimburse you? I guess all depends on what insurance one has. Does anyone have

experience with their insurance paying or offering to pay?

=============================================

The companions work various shifts -- an 8 hour shift is 90.00.

A 12 hour shift is more -- I think it is 135 (I hired for 8 hour shifts

at a time).

The nurse/companion office is on the second floor at Mt. Sinai --

turn around the corner from the gift shop. I don't have the exact

room number, though. You must go and apply in person (the day

of the surgery or before). I do not think they take phone reservations.

You pay the aide at the end of their shift (I think this is true of the

nurses as well) by check -- they will provide a receipt. The private aides

were a real LIFESAVER for me. Not only to help me in and out of bed,

etc. but also to procure clean gowns, breakfast in a timely manner, etc.

Things you would think are taken care of routinely (such as fresh bedding/

gowns, rubdowns/washes) *may not* be at Mt. Sinai. The private aide

really knows where everything is and will ensure that you are all 'hooked up'

with necessities, etc.
